Re: which is better catback - I PD or supersprint? 850 1995

Hi Dave,

I recently had a supersprint cat-back exhaust installed in my stock 1995 850 turbo. This was the system without the second resonator, only a single muffler at the end. The system is 2.5" diameter and is SS on the entire system except for the outer shell of the muffler as I was told by my vendor. I'm in California so rust is not as much of a concern here. The system is not overly loud at all compared to stock. Sitting in the car, I can here just a slight bit more drone in the 2000 rpm range, otherwise I find the sound not objectionable at all. I think most of your sound increase will come if you start changing the cats or the downpipe, otherwise, a cat-back system introduces only a nominal change in sound. I like that the exhaust tip is oval shaped instead of round for the IPD. I think both systems are comparable and pretty much up to you depending on your budget. I think the IPD system may have two resonators so it could be a bit quieter but I'm not sure. In anycase, I got a great deal on a customer returned unit from BMPD.com and paid on $287 for my system so that made my choice easy. I would have to say that the install for my supersprint at least was not smooth, my muffler shop had to trim the pipe a little and the hangers had to be relocated to fit properly. I'm not sure if it was just my unit but if you plan to install this yourself, then the IPD system would be the better bet in terms of fit and finish. Hope this helps.

Rich

Go with the Ferrita exhaust system. It's much cheaper, fully stainless steel, and has 2.5 inch tubing. I doubt anyone one of these exhaust will add much performance though.

Re: which is better catback - I PD or supersprint? 850 1996

i'd say it boils down to price difference.

i have the whole S/sprint exos set-up on my brick from d/pipe to catback. there're 2 alternatives for the S/sprint catback, one with mid-muffler n the other w/out. i took the one w/out, and found the droning just too intrusive. actually, the sound is more a result of running without a cat than anything else (my d/pipe includes a cat-replacing bullet-shaped resonator), but anyway i custom fabricated a cylindrical muffler where our stock pancake sits. that took most of the droning away.

as for the material, i can't recall exactly, but i think most of the s/sprint catback IS s/steel. it's just the inside construction (plates) of the Rr muffler which is mild steel.

diameter - s/sprint is 2.5in all the way.

Define better...

Neither one is better than the other if you can't even ask the right question.

Supersprint is not all stainless and some are only 2.25 inches. I would opt for IPD

Re: which is better catback - I PD or supersprint? 850 1996

I thought SS has 2.5...

And supersprint does have all stainless steel (for the C70..it has the stainless steel 'finish')...or do you mean the 'look'?

I can define better but I asked a general question to get whatever wide range of opinions people wanted to share.

Re: which is better catback - I PD or supersprint? 850 1996

superspint is only 2.5" downpipe, and everything is stainless steel except the outer casing of the muffler which is mild steel for some reason.

IPD system is a larger diameter, and fully stainless steel . ON their web site they claim it is very quiet but i cant verify that.

not sure there is practically one that is better - my opion would be that the quietest one was the best, but that depends on why you are changing the exhaust in the first place....

Re: which is better catback - I PD or supersprint? 850 1996

Dave, I installed an IPD unit on my 95 855T. I spent 2/3 of the time just getting the old unit out. The point at which the pipes separate from the cat was my only problem. I have blanked it from my memory. What I would suggest is getting a new clamp from a dealer before disassembly. I think that would have made it easier for me to understand what I was up against. I couldn't figure out if the nut was just rusted ( and what size) or welded - it turned out it was welded. As to the sound, my 15 yr old loves it, my wife tolerates it because she doesn't have to drive, I don't hear a big difference. I also installed the performance ECU. But i didn't make it to the track, before or after. I wouold like to know what 1/4 mile times you run, before and after, and do you have a manual or auto. I have an auto.

Good luck.
