IPD had a sale so I ordered plugs, wires and ignition packs for the 2001 S40. I have never replaced ignition packs before, anything I need to know?

    Normally, one only replaces the packs when they fail. They will not fail together, just one at a time. So when you get a misfire on cyl n, replace just that one.

      I see - I saw them listed somewhere as a regular maintenance item, to be replaced every 50k or so. I already ordered 2 of them so I guess if they do not need replacing yet I can just hang on to them until they are needed. No misfires right now.

        Thanks for the kind words. My wife said I retired 15 years ago!
        I didn't even look at who posted when I responded to this one. I think I am getting punch drunk :) Too many people with the same problems!

        The way you maintain your cars, they will last a very long time. And stop driving on the divider dots (we don't have those things, the plows would take them all out on the first snow day).

        Probably around the 100K mark, depending on engine compartment heat.

          OK well I will have a ways to go then, the "new" S40 only has 52k miles on it. Good thing they don't expire.

          Seriously Klaus you have saved me thousands of $$ over the years by helping me maintain my own cars. My co-workers all think I am a mechanical genius when they hear whatever job I did over the weekend and I just tell them my internet friends tell me how to fix things :)
