Got a T5R today Need Some Help

Being a long time Volvo owner and fan I picked up a yellow 95 t5r from the goodwill auction today for $525, I realize it will need some work. I found all kinds of electrical things that weren't working but traced it to the ignition switch that needs replacing. I drove it home and it has a terrible wheel bearing noise, no biggie. But what I am most concerned about is I took it easy on the drive home and waited til a nice wide straight piece of road to see what it had. Boy was I disappointed when I floored it and one of the biggest puffs of blueish black smoke came out of the back and the car just fell flat on its face. So can anyone tell me what I am in for here, I am prepared to go the distance with this car because I have wanted one for many moons now and finally have it. And being only $525 into it I think I'll be alright. So where would you guys start. I haven't had enough time to get underneath it but did manage to clean the interior up some, which is the least of my worries.

After you get a compression test, replace the plugs, wires, cap & rotor with OEM goods. Go to Stylin' Motors : http://www.stylinmotors.com/volvo.html
and replace every vacuum hose you can find. The blue ones look pretty good.

Take a good look at their intercooler piping...

Do NOT rev this engine again until it sounds really good. You don't want to bend a valve because the timing belt is old.

Sounds like it will be a very fun car....eventually. Check the compression. If you need to have the valves done, have the existing head rebuilt (as opposed to buying a used or rebuild) by a volvo specific machine shop. It's a lot of work, but it's also an opportunity to gain access to all that old stuff that needs to be cleaned, replaced, tightened... And a freshly rebuilt head will make a huge difference in performance.

But hopefully your compression is good...
