'96 855 rear main seal repair... 850

Hi,

Klaus, I'm guessing you'll know the answer to this...I need to have the rear main seal replaced on my '96 855 and I'm not going to do it myself. Could you, or anyone recommend a good mechanic in the Twin Cities Metro Area that does these jobs???

Thank You!

Thanks Dee Jay! I'll post everyone on what I decide. First I am going to replace the "breather" components with the kit from Groton, it needs it anyway, its at the mileage where Volvo says it needs servicing. Once I get that done I will change the oil and use Mobil 1, I think Mobil one has a high mileage formula now as well. Anyway, then I'll keep an eye on things and see where I'll go from there. I was always (before I owned Volvo's) a Amsoil fanatic, but Mobil 1 is getting great reviews and Amsoil is really out-pricing themselves, it has become partially a financial issue for me. Thanks again for your comments/advice!

Don't bother with the "high mileage" oils, that is just a scam to get more money. A regular synthetic is good enough.
I would run a bottle of AutoRx with the current oil, before you switch to synthetic. It cleans everything quite nicely. Of course, starting with a breather kit helps matters considerably.

The puddle of oil is about 4" in diameter, but doesn't happen all the time when I park the car. I haven't done anything with the oil seperator/flame trap system, etc...Sounds like this is my next project eh? Here comes a thousands questions!!!

There is a reputable Volvo shop in St Paul somewhere. Have you changed out the oil separator already? Cleaned the PCV or PCT? Is it leaking a lot or just a quarter size?
As you already know, it is quite expensive and labor is not cheap around here. Also give Quality Coaches a call, just for another extimate.

It may sound weird, but I 'fixed' my '96 850 (non turbo) RMS leak recently by using Auto-RX (on the recommendation of folks here). The product is an oil additive which completely de-gunked my breather/pcv system within miles (and presumable relieved crankcase pressure) within 1k miles...noticable reduction in oil leakage (according to the driveway 'spot' method) after 48 hours/30 miles.

it's pricey, but I'm sold, and figure I've saved ~$1k.

      Details at: www.auto-rx.com

      Good luck whatever you decide.
