Air duct temperature sensor?

Hi all,

My S70 has ECC.

I've noticed that there is a rapid clicking sound from the center to right side of the dash.

Adjusting the air direction (middle dial) doesn't have any effect on the noise. I can hear the damper motors working and the air flow changes as indicated.

However, if I raise the R temperature dial a notch or two the sound stops.

The AC blows cold, there are no error signals from the control unit and the main temperature sensor is clean.

Also, the noise continues with the engine off as long as the ignition switch is on.

What's up?

Thanks,
Bryan

There are 5 or 6 temp sensors through out the car for the ECC. To find the noise, I suggest taking off the passenger kick panel and pulling out the glove compartment.
As to the noise stopping when turning the passenger temp dial, it is possible that the left and right temps are not totally accurate. To verify, turn the dirvers side down a couple of clicks and see if it goes away. The unit is probably trying to adjust a vent that is already wide open.

      Air duct temperature sensor?

      Hi Klaus,

Good diagnosis. Turning down the driver's temp does make the noise stop.

So, any idea which vent may be wide open and how I to fix it?

Can I re-calibrate the system w/o connecting to VADIS?

      Thanks,
      Bryan

Each vent motor, about $250 at the dealer, has internal stop sensors similar to the headlight wipers and tailgate wiper. I can only presume one of the stops is broken and the motor is trying to close/open the vent farther than it can. Eventually the motor will burn out.

The only way you can determine which motor it is, is to remove the glovebox an listen.

Unfortunately, VADIS is required to reprogram the ECC after the motor is replaced. This is true of all Volvos after 1995.

        Sorry,

        Klaus

          Hi Klaus,

That's what I was afraid of.

I'll take out the glove box this week-end and see if I can ID the failing motor.

The fun never ends, does it?

          Thanks again for your help.

          Bryan
