ABS Brakes - warning light keeps coming on V70-XC70 2001

My ABS brake warning light keeps coming on - by the time I get it to the mechanic, it has gone off and they can't diagnose the problem. Yesterday, it came on again shortly after I heard a "thunk" from the front of the car - then the error message board read out that there was also a traction control problem AND the check engine light came on. I am not touching the car until I get it to the mechanic - has anyone had a similar problem? The mechanic has gone over the brake system and can't find anything but, until now, I'd never heard the "thunk" - I'm assuming that there is something going on.

    Hi,
have you read your codes? The failure of ABS unit is fairly common but the reason can also be one of the sensors identified by codes. This was the case in my 850-94 some years ago, was replaced with low cost reuse-sensor.

The mechanic couldn't read the codes as every time I took it in, the light would go off. This happened three times until the check engine light came on and remained that way for him to read. Very frustrating as they could tell the ABS light had gone on but there was nothing to indicate what the problem was.

What Klaus said ^^^. This is a fairly common problem. Search ABS in this forum. THe car is certainly drivable, just no ABS or traction control. Klaus mentioned Vic Rocha as a repair contact for the ABS module. I can offer a different source on the east coast, in Massachusetts. BBA-Reman.
http://www.bba-reman.com/uk/index.aspx. I used them when the ABS module went bad in my 2001 V70. THey offer 3 levels of service for the unit. rebuild yours, exchange yours, or ah, I forget. But, They have very fair pricing and great service. I delt with them over the phone and was very pleased.

Car in today - yes, it was the ABS sensor module at 93,000 miles. Didn't go with the Canadian Volvo dealer for parts as they wanted $1087 Cdn for the unit alone. Thank god I had taken the car to an independent mechanic who is waiting for me to get the part on my own and then give it to him for installation - no charge for the diagnostics, either. $300 to install, though - what goes next on these cars? I'm getting discouraged.

You can do this yourself! Removal and install take less than 15 minutes. Directions are on Victor's website. Our S70 had the same problem recently, took the ABS off (on our car I removed the air box to get to the lower crews, as he describes for turbos which ours is not) but it is a very very straightforward removal and install. Don't pay a mechanic to do it.

$300CDN to R&R an ABS module??? Less than 1 hour of labor? All he has to do is remove the air cleaner, unscrew the module, unplug the old one, plug in the new one and put it all back? It is not hard for DIY.

The CEL might just be unrelated to your ABS problem. The ABS module has a tendancy to fail due to poor use of soldering joints. The dealer will try to sell you a new unit for a LOT of money, but you can have it repaired:

All you need is an E5 torx driver and a few days of turn around. The car is driveable without the ABS module, just no speedo signal on the dash.

Get your codes read for free at most auto parts stores.
