Just soaked my engine in water.... 850 1996R

Its a monsoon outside and I just drove down a flooded street to

get into the only entrance, barely putting along after sucking

water into some orifice of my engine. It is now firing randomly

and there is a thick sulfuric smell coming from the exhaust. Check

Engine light is also on. Right now I have it parked in a garage,

hopefully drying off.

Any ideas what happened?

-John

If you mean me, I'm in Jacksonville. We just had torrential rains. The 850 hates those puddles. It's too low.

Re: Just soaked my engine in water.... 850 1996R

John: a few thoughts to add to Sin's analysis/suggestions: you probably got your alternator wet, as well as your catalytic converter, which went from super-super hot to ambient (=cold) water temperature in a flash, when you 'hit' the water; and as you know, cats don't like water! :>) Also, if you wind up having to undo your battery, there is a product that takes a 9-voly battery and plugs into your cigarette lighter (costs between $10US and $15 depending on source...IPD has them, as well as 'autosportcatalog': it keeps your radio codes, etc., which you would otherwise have to re-set after a battery dis-co). I know it's a bummer to encounter high water, but unless it's an emergency worth endangering you and your car for, 'the authorities' suggest NOT driving thru high water, and you have just found out, the hard way, one reason why. Let us know how it comes out?--PD

Re: Just soaked my engine in water.... 850 1996R

I let the car sit for 2 hours and it started up with

no idling problems. Check Engine light was still on. Other

than that, no problems. Its now at the service shop drying

out and having the oil changed. Hopefully that's the end

of my woes. Next time i'll have to figure out a way around

the "lake" that I had to wade through. It seems only the SUV

drivers here at work made it through unscathed.

      Thanks Sin and PD

Did the same thing last year........sucks doesn't it! Changed the air filter (soaked), cleaned out the throttle body, changed the oil, cleared the codes. Ran fine after that. Catalytic converter did not survive the swim however. Replaced that at a later date and all is well since.

Your engine ingested water. The water caused misfiring. You have probably fouled your plugs, and contaminated your engine oil.

I would disconnect as much of the ignition system as possible, dry, and replace if necessary. REPLACE the plugs, and change the oil.

Re: Just soaked my engine in water.... 850 1996R

On another water-related issue, while driving in water just a few inches deep my '95 850T's serpentine belt appears to be slipping as the power steering is affected. But the dash warning lights all flicker on and off also. Could the same belt be slipping around the alternator pulley be the cause?

      Thanks -Chris

What makes you think the serpentine belt is slipping?

What is the power steering doing to make you think the serpentine belt is slipping?

The dash warnig lights have been known to flciker on and off. Sometimes, this is followed by other problems, but more often, the dash lights flickering should be no big deal.

I can feel the steering get stiff for a moment, as in when a belt slips over the pump. This only happens when driving in monsoon conditions here in Florida.

          Thanks -Chris
