Intermittent Hesitation during Acceleration, CEL V70-XC70 2000

Doing a little diagnosis from a couple states away... Car is 2000 V70XC, 180Kish miles.

The symptom: Under load (like when climbing a hill), the car will sometimes "hesitate". CEL is on. The codes were cleared a couple weeks ago. One returned after the symptom exhibited itself recently. It is P1175 which I translate to "Fuel adaptation bank 1".

I haven't come up with much diagnosis on the web, here, volvoxc.com or volvospeed. Best I can come up with is to check the fuel pressure and look for leaks between the turbo and intake manifold.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Will

This might help:

Because it only happens under boost, the TCV could be bad; one of the vacuum lines at the TCV could be loose, a leak in the intercooler lines, etc.

Problem resolved V70-XC70 2000

The problem progressed to the point where it would stall in traffic.

Turns out the problem was a split in the intake plumbing at the hose at the top of the intercooler. years of heat and a pool of oil in the tube took its toll. I'm told everything is back to normal after a temporary fix of some butyl tape and an odd piece of exhaust pipe. New hose is now in-hand.

Hah, easy fix, tough to diagnose. When my intercooler hose came loose, it was with a very large BANG (full boost) and then idle speed only after that. Limp home was OK because it was all down hill.

I guess I will have to remember this for future posts.

I am not a mechanic, so can you trust what I type?

My first thoughts: Clean the MAF and throttle body. It is running too rich, too long, before additional air is introduced to the manifold.
Second thought: How good is the ETM?
Third thought: How dirty is the air cleaner?

ETM was replaced a few years ago, not sure how long mileage-wise.

I like your suggestions. Especially knowing that the plugs were replaced recently after it was discovered that they were worn to massive gaps. Needs some simple maintenance. Unfortunately the more time spent fiddling that doesn't fix the problem, the more it frustrates the driver and reduces confidence in the car and the mechanic's ability to maintain it.

Good words, Will. That is why so many people just buy new cars every 3-5 years. They don't have a desire to learn mechanics, or lack confidence in their own ability to learn.

Volvos, besides having poor resale value for a very good car, are very easily maintained compared to Audi, BMW, and Mercedes. It only took me 4 years and the Brickboard to learn what little I know, that will never happen with a Mercedes or BMW.

Your friend could take the car to an Indie Volvo shop for a diagnosis and it might just be an easy fix. Just tell him/her to talk a lot and make sure the mechanic understands the problem. "It doesn't run right" will ensure a large bill.
