transmission oil change S60 2001

My '01 S60 2.4T has just turned 60,000 miles,
Does the trans oil need changing?
Is a full flush recommended.
I realize the only the oil from Volvo at $$$ per quart is the only one recommended.
Can I just replace several quarts at a time by draining at the drain plug and refilling?
The filler point is not very accesable.

What do you think?

If you do a lot of stop and go driving, yes, it is time for a flush.

Removing the fresh air duct to the air cleaner (if it is still on the driver's side on the S60) reveals the AT dipstick and the cooler hoses. You will need a tranny funnel with a long spout.

I am a believer of flushing from the cooler hose; 30 minutes and no jack needed.

If your tranny is a 5 speed, then 3309 ATF is needed. Mobile makes it, as does Toyota parts dept. Around $6/quart and you will need at least 10 quarts for a flush.

Klaus:
I managed to get the inlet air plastic ducting off, but that is just the beginning of the access problem. The car is a turbo and one of the intercooler pipes is right above the dipstick. Removing that pipe does not look simple.
There is a water hose below the intercooler pipe, but I can work around that.

Then how does the dipstick come out?
Twist a bit like a S90? (in which I have changed out a couple of quarts of ATF on a regular basis.)
Is there a latch?
Or just pull?

No way a funnel will go in there for filling, but I can make a multiple-kinked funnel adapter from hobby shop brass tubing.

Thanks in advance.

I snuck a peek at a new S60 T5 at the dealer the other day, OMG! There is NO room in the engine bay! I understand your problem better now. And I thought the V70R was tight, heck, I could see daylight in spots.

The tranny dipstick appears to be a twist off. The ATF is still the same color.

Klaus:
Thanks for the help.

I try to not do the grocery getting with it, and it is not used as a commuter car.

Can I look at the oil on the dipstick, or after putting it on a napkin?
Maybe I can use a piece of white paper to judge the color.
Not sure what color it should be.
Is it the same color as the Ordinary ATF or Mobil 1 ATF?

I think the dipstick is where you said.
I have the dedicated clean funnel with a hose on it.
I change out two quarts of ATF in my S90 every 7-10 K miles or so.

Where can I get the 3309 Mobil 1?
My extra quart of Mobil 1 ATF does not mention 3309.

Thanks in advance,

Sixvolvos

Mobile 1 ATF and 3309 are two DIFFERENT fluids. You can use Mobile 1 ATF in 850s and other 4speed trannies, not the 5 speed.
Toyota uses 3309 ATF and it is at a reasonable price.

Matthews Volvo site advocates dumping from the tranny drain and then finishing with a flush. I have never understood their logic for doing so, except you get to turn a wrench, use a lock washer, and guess the amount of ATF gets dumped.

I just use a paper towel when wiping the tranny dipstick, works quite well.

transmission oil change V70-XC70 2004

I have a similar question. I own a 2004 V70 with 90K miles and the 5 speed automatic transmission that also always manual shifting (triptronic I believe). Do you also recommend a regular flush and change for this year? I guess what I am really asking is, regardless of year do you still recommend regular transmission fluid flush and replace? Thank you!

It depends on the amount of stop and go driving you do. If mostly highway, 100K for the first flush. If mostly stop and go, 50K intervals.
