Looking at a 2002 XC and am wondering if the 4WD transmission issues were resolved by this model.
Thanks

Thanks for the informative replies. Seems like I need to find one with 50,000 and then have the fluid drained/changed. Would the TSB drilling be someting I could ask a dealer/Volvo aftermarketer to perform, or is it something that should have been performed?
Thanks again.

A "good" mechanic can do it for you. The DIY write up is on Volvospeed, somewhere.
The auto trans is usually good for 100K before it's first flush. The bevel gear oil depends on the amount of slippery roads and heavy throttle being used. I like to flush it at 30-50K intervals for the R models, probably a little longer for XC cars with less horse power.
My 1998 R had 105K when I bought it, but it was from Kansas so I didn't worry too much about the bevel gear oil. I flushed it and the tranny at 110K.

I don't think so. From what I have heard, they did not get them all fixed until 2005.

1998-2000 were the worst years. 2001 model year I'd avoid for other reasons (first year, electrical problems, etc.) By 2002 everything has been fairly sorted out. Volvo enlisted Haldex (Audi) to do it right. Haven't seen one catastrophic failure yet. Splined coupler between the angle drive and transmission has stripped out on some, but much more common on the XC90. 2002-2005 XC70 is as good as it gets as far as a Volvo these days.
P.S. the 2005's -> haven't given as much of a problem because the whole fleet is only 5 years old. Give them three more years.
I work on em all day long.

Hello,
since you work on the AWDs -
For a person interested in long life and overall lowest operating cost - is it better to stick to 2wd cars generally?
Also are AWD volvos better, worse or similar to AWDs of other makes, incl Subaru, Acura, Audi/VW or any of the typical SUVs?
Your opinion would be of value to many, I'm sure!
thanks

Here's my take on AWD Subaru has one of the best systems as they have been doing AWD longer than anyone. Audi and too has a good system too everyone else played catch up to the leaders. BTW I had a trans shop for a while so I saw all types of problems and know what to look for .

Speaking as someone who had a trans shop, what is your opinion regarding rebuilding the bevel gears on these cars?
I understand the bevel gears are a very similar design right from 1998 through sometime ~2003? maybe later?
I also understand they fail due to bad fluid maint procedures (ie: not changing it, so it burns up). Can they be rebuilt (new seals/bearings/gears) by any local trans shop?
Also, I have been told that the original models (1998) used a different gear ratio in the bevel gear than the 1999&2000. What do you think would be the consequences of using the 1999 bevel gear in a 1998 car, and vice-versa? I can only assume everything else must be the same (trans diff, rear diff, viscous coupler, freewheel, driveshafts, etc)....

I have a 04’ XCV70 with 87,000 miles on it, transmission works well. The only concern about the transmission is VOLVO has no time when the fluid needs to be changed. Just like the radiator fluid, in this case I just had the dealer flush and replace with the same VOLVO fluid. My question to DJBybee, since you work on these cars every day what does you shop manual recommend?

We replace trans fluid with 30K services. Volvo fluid or Mobil 3309. Very important. Takes 4 quarts. I laugh at "lifetime" fluids because when your transmission craps out due to neglect, the prospect of a $4000 transmission replacement automatically ends the life of the vehicle, thus fulfilling the prophecy.
For the truly anal, fluid in the front differential can be changed, but its a chore, as there is no drain plug - fluid must be pumped out via filler.

Klaus is right. There is a TSB about this. The procedure is very easy, and quick to do.
Also I would contend that this is not just for the truly anal, but for those who want their AWD system to last. 50K mile service interval on the fluid in there is plenty. That fluid NEEDS to be changed, as does the fluid in the rear diff (though I suspect that fluid will last much longer).
Heat is the death of lubricating fluids, and there seems to be plenty of heat in those bevel gears.

Check your TSBs. Drilling a drain hole using the bottom bolt on the bevel gear case is the way to go. Easy to do, requires no additional parts, and does not leak. Every AWD Volvo should have this done, 1997-2009.

is the transmission fluid the same as the toyota 4 fluid that seems to be what my local dealer uses and it is about 9.00 per litre what is the price of the mobil product thanks for the information

I am not familiar with Canadian prices or availibility of Mobile 3309 ATF. Stop by your local Toyota parts dept and ask to look at a bottle of their ATF. The fluid MUST be 3309 compatible, it will say so on the label.
To do a good flush, you will need at least 10 liters. A bit pricey, but cheap compared to having a tranny rebuilt.
