Volvo Diagnostic Reader S80 2001

I just got one of these PPC from BSR. It read codes from every possible computer in the car. The codes it read, if I'm interpreting the data correctly, ranged from my alarm being activated and which door was opened, changing wiper blades, which button wasn't working on my climate panel, my door locking problem,as well as the dreaded throttle unit. There were other codes but can't recall them.
I reset the codes and the car runs better. It idles smoother (so I think) and it also did something where my seat memory buttons now work. At this point, I'm very pleased with with diagnostic tool.
I would suggest getting this tool if you are DIY mechanic.

Hi, nice to see we have a few BSR users around.
I think the generic procedure is:
- read codes, remove cause and reset codes.
What happened to me few months ago was that the codes couldn't be reset until ECM software was first updated by dealer.
Thus I had a car with reduced power for weeks due to the codes. after reset the full power was there again.

What's PPC from BSR? Obviously it's a scanner but what's PPC an abreviation for as well as BSR?
Thanks

BSR is the same company that makes code readers for Volvo dealers. At under $200 it is the real deal for Volvos, and buying a generic reader for over $100 sounds silly.

Portable Program Carrier is a unique hand held tuning system developed by BSR AB of Sweden.
Try www.ppc-diagnostic.com to answer some questions. I purchased mine via Ebay with 20% off using BING.

Good Luck

Pretty strange. Diagnostic readers don't fix anything. They just retrieve fault codes from the car's computer/s. Erasing fault codes doesn't make problems go away, it just erases them from the computer's data base until the problems reoccur and the fault codes are set again.

Just a coincidence if anything seems to work better/again after using the code reader.

I was also thinking that the reader would just read codes, but just taking a look at my seat position memory, they now work. Perhaps some codes prevent the modules from continuing to function. I look at it as a reboot of your PC to unfreeze it.

Quite correct. These new computers do require the stored codes to be cleared. The typical hand held scanner only does engine related scanning, while yours scans everything.
On my 1995 850, I used to read and clear the codes at evvery oil change. Some codes were there because I boosted to redline with 89 octane, while others complained about dust build up in the ECC. Clearing the codes allows the computers to start with a fresh slate, but you should write down the "potential" problems in case they happen to pop up again.
There are those that think codes should only be read when the check engine light comes on. Wrong. The CEL represents a severe error or a collection of smaller errors which have been ignored.
I like your code reader, but I would need a 100ft cord to attach it to my desk top. I am old and too cheap to buy a lap top just for a car :)

That makes sense. But sooner or later you'll probably still have to deal with whatever set the code in the first place.
