Anyone ever tow a pop up with a V70? V70-XC70

I recently aquired a Starcraft pop up camper from my in-laws. I towed it 800 miles with an F150 truck. This is a V6/manual transmission with similar power to the V70 T5 though the T5 has 25 more hp and the torque is over a wider range.

I would like to tow this for camping with the family. The camper is about 1200lb curb weight so when packed I'm guessing 1500 or so. I will get it weighed just to be sure.

The '98 V70 is rated 1100lb unbraked and 3300lb with a braked trailer. I plan on adding electric brakes to the camper.

I'd like to know how well the V70 tends to handle towing. Mine has the factory tow hitch/wiring and I've added IPD sways and good struts.

    Hi Mormit

I have a starcraft pop up ,about 1300 lbs with out brakes and tow it with my 2002 v70 24T, which is the light pressure turbo. I haven't had any problems at all. I use to tow it with a 850 GLT sedan non turbo and also had no problems. I found that you need to leave the trailer a little heavier on the tongue or she'll start to dance at high speed, as Kluas mentions.

It's well within the max towing capacity of the V70 but I just wanted to get some opinions.

Sounds like I'll be just fine, again I plan on adding brakes because the unbraked max of the V70 says 1100. Going a little over should be fine but this Starcraft is rated near 1300lb empty so I'd would guess about 1500lb loaded.

This guy and his wife shipped their V70d and Biod fiberglass camper over from Europe and are about three quarters through a whole circle of the US with their rig so far. Don't remember the specs on the Biod; it's in the text somehere. Read all about it here ...

So long as the weight is well distributed and the rear of the car isn't weighed down with a lot of extras, should not be a major problem.
When going up long inclines, remember to shift down to 3rd so the tranny doesn't over heat. And don't plan on doing 75+ on the interstates. You don't want the trailer wagging the car.
