AC mildew smell

I have a 2001 V70 (non-turbo) and whenever I run the AC, I get a strong musty mildew odor coming out of the vents.

I have read in previous posts that people have sprayed a cleaner into the air intakes, which I tried but did not help. I also replaced the cabin air filter.

I have also heard of a foam that is injected into the evaporator as well as a "Roach bomb" that is used while the AC running that cleans out the vents and evaporator.

Has anyone used the foam? How difficult is it to use?

Has anyone tried any of these? The smell is getting worse and I do not want to let my family ride in it.

Thank you.

AC mildew smell

The problem is that the evaporator is wet when you turn off the car and the AC was being used. New cars have a timer/relay to run the cabin fan after the car has been used in order to dry off the evap.
You might want to try turning off the AC for the last mile of your trips. The extra 2 minutes of air blowing over the warming evaporator should help.

Spraying Lysol in the air intake, with the filter out, should help so long as the fan is running and the AC is switched on, but engine not running. Let the lysol sit for at least 15 minutes before starting the engine back up.

You cannot spray foam into the evap, there is no access to it. Use an insecticide? No, that won't work either.

AC mildew smell

I did try turning off the AC for several minutes before I switched off the car. My car also has the "afterblow" feature enabled. Neither is helping.

I have tried the "Pure Air" product from Interdynamics, it is similiar to the BG product. It didn't help either.

The foam is from BG, but I can only find shops around here that want to sell the service.
