Possibly my Son's First Car S70 1999

I will be looking at privately owned S70 turbo with 102K miles on it tomorrow. The car will be my son's first vehicle. The car never had the throttle body replaced or the MAF sensor replaced. The owner stated the check engine light comes on periodically, which indicates to me most likely the MAF sensor. The car otherwise is in good shape. She is asking $3400.00. So, should we stay away from the car and if so, what model should I be looking at. I cannot spend more then $3500.00(son is contributing 2K). I really need something SAFE! Thanks for any help in this really important matter..

How hard are you looking? S70 1999

Your son could use something like this:

A 1994 BMW 530, but automatic :(

Just get on your local Craigslist and put in $3000 for the max amount and see what is in your area. The BMW and Mercedes are just as safe as Volvo, besides, you might be able to find a 5 speed with a clutch!!

The S70 GLT is a nice, safe car. The price is OK, depending on where in the USA you live. Having complete maintenance records counts for at least $500, but you need to read them before buying.
The Tbelt is scheduled for 105K, but a lot of folks changed the belt and tensioner at 90K - maint records!
The CEL going on every once in a while is an indication of either the fuel vapor system or the O2 sensors.
To save money, check the tires and brakes. If the rotors have a good lip on them, you will also need rotors at next pad change.
The ETM warranty has expired, 10 years from original sale date. A Canadian company rebuilds them to never fail again, but still not cheap.

This engine requires 89 octane, minimum. No cheap regular!

Are there no cheap 850s? 1994-1998? Or really nice 240s with ABS?

102k miles = new timing belt straight away

expect to do tranny flush. Easy DIY ~100$ + ~1 hour

expect to do PCV system unless PO can prove only synthetic oil was used. Tougher to DIY ~250$ + all day (!!)

That's all basic maintenance that'll be due.

I don't know how reliable the ABS modules are on those ones.

By "not had throttle body replaced" I take you to mean the ETM has not been changed. This may/may not be a problem - I don't know if they ALL failed or not.

Give the sway bar end links a shake to check for play.

I think you're looking at a good car for him. The 1998 was a bit simpler, but only marginally.

Taking on someone else's old car can be a real chore for a year or so until you get everything ironed out...
