Misfire when idling 850 1996

How come i almost always get the lambda light (check engine light?)to come on when standing still with the engine running. Normally this happens at a red light or similar situation.

Fault codes are: 451,452,453,454,455 (Misfire on cylinder #1,2,3,4,5)

543 (Misfire on at least one cylinder)

Rotor, plugs etc. has been changed. ECU connectors cleaned. The dealer is stumped apparently...and so am I.

The code always clears so i assume this is not a major problem. I have been running the car about 50000km without any trouble.

I would really like it fixed anyway since i disregard the light when it comes on and will not be able to realise i have a major problem if it occurs. Another issue would be when i want to sell it.

I'd sure appreciate any suggestions.

Re: Misfire when idling 850 1996

peter,

check all, i mean all your vacuum hoses. i had a similar problem with my 96 and i found 3 hoses with leaks. it gets very hot in the engine compartment and it eventually cooks those rubber hoses, esp. the elbow connectors.

Re: Misfire when idling 850 1996

How many vacuum hoses/connections are there to check? I have a '96 850 GLT with the check engine ling on with O2 sensor codes. I've read here and at Volvospeed.com to check the vacuum hoses. The ones that I can find seem to be good, but I have not been able to locate that one that is on the left side (passengers side) of the engine as shown in the picture on volvospeed.com? How do I find this one, or is it only on turbos? Once I locate this one, I'll probably just go on ahead and replace them all to see if that eliminates the check engine light.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: Misfire when idling 850 1996

I had the same problem. I did the tune up and I had Texaco do a "real" fuel system cleaning. Lastly I put a fresh fuel filter in. The problem "went away". The theory was that the car wasn't getting enough fuel. The codes got thrown at idle and high revs, but not at cruising speed.

Good luck.

Re: Misfire when idling 850 1996

I had a misfire problem during idle and discovered that 3 of the 5 plug wires had resistance readings way out of tolerence. I replace them along with the cap and rotor and the problem went away.

Cheers!

Right, good call I forgot to mention that I checked my wires and they were fine.
