Is there a way of reading the code for the check engine light without a code reader on a 1998 v70?

    Nope. Need scanner. Cheap ones are out there. Beware, though, codes from a generic scanner when used on a Volvo can lead you in the wrong direction. Quirkly little beasts, they are.

    You don't have to buy a code reader. Most autoparts stores will loan one for parking lot use.
