Engine RPM when shifting 850

Hello everyone,

I have a Volvo 850 1997 non turbo with a manual 5 speed transmission. I made a search for engine rpm but only found idle speed subjects... When I press the clutch pedal to shift into first or reverse gear the rpm rise to 1500 and go back to 900. The almost same thing happen when I upshift, the rpm rise a litle when the clutch pedal is floored.

I never was able to compare with another 850 manual so I am asking your help:)

Thanks

Ive owned to FWD 5 speeds. Both of mine seem to hold the RPMs while shifting. Let's say I shift at 2500 rpms, the engine seems to rev up about 200 rpms, then starts to drop. Its makes it easier to shift without having to think as much about rev matching to avoid clutch wear.

Ive never seen mine act as yours does, revving at a stop into first or reverse. Do you think it's a problem, or does it just bug you? I can't think of any foul play, or any harm that might be going on in your engine or transmission.just make sure that you are engaging the clutch slow so you don't wear it down prematurely.

Are you in a cold climate?

I am in South east of Canada (Montreal) but it is acting anytime... I don't think it's harmful but I think the rpm is rising a litle more since I put Synthetic engine oil last month.

Just a thought. You might want to flush the transmission oil. Sounds like the idle control is regulating the engine speed and when you push in the clutch, the engine has less to push while spinning and the rpm's go up until the idle control gets the speed back down.

I actually just switched an s70 5 speed (~150k miles) to synthetic, mine didn't do it! =)

I wouldn't worry about it, only thing I can think of is a throttle position sensor? But I think that is a stretch.
