Gas smell? Where is it most likely coming from? 850 1995

Still working on this new-to-me 850 and I am smelling gas every time I get into the car. What is the most likely culprit, leaky injector, fuel line leak, or something else?

If this car is a turbo and it has back fired, check the intercooler hose where it connects to the throttle body. Aback fire will blow it open then the turbo doesn't work at all and the engine starves for air and runs rich and smell of strong gas.
    Good Luck!!! RK

I had a bad gas smell the other day and noticed some vapor coming from under the hood. It was a leaking injector. The engine was running rough also. I have new injector seals ordered. Also a new fuel pressure regulator.
The fuel never leaked onto the ground since the intake manifold was so warm, it just evaporated. The intake manifold is nice and clean though.
    Good Luck !!! RK

Can you tell if it's stronger in the engine compartment or not? Are there any wet spots under the car? Maybe jack the car up and look around a bit. Do you know if the car was in any sort of accident? There are pump/filter connections, tank venting tubing, vapor recovery connections, fuel delivery/filling connections, etc. that could be the cause. You've just got to track them down one by one. Good luck.

Lift the carpet behind the seat to expose the covers for the pump and sender. The seal might have gone bad.

I too had a problem with the seal on the top of the gas tank.

Thanks Klaus. As usual your input seems most logical as being where the fumes are coming in. I have noticed the smell is inside the car and around the car outside AFTER I open the door and release the fumes to the outside air. Once the car is moving the smell is gone. I guess I will have to order a new seal.

Look before you buy 850 1995

That is a logical place, but not the only place for a gas leak. Your nose is the best detector, but spend the 15 minutes to look at the pump and make an easy determination before ordering a new seal.

its probably a broken vacuum line somewhere. Check near the fuel filter (infront of RR tire). Theres a plastic elbow there that breaks often. Also check the lines in and around the engine compartment. It wont be the actual fuel line unless there is a pool of gas on the ground under the car.
