Is the leak right at the converter or is it back at the clamped joint?
I recently fixed the clamped joint on my 850. The forward (cat) pipe has a bulb on the end and the rear pipe has a flare that fits it. On my car the rear pipe had rusted and sheared off. This was perhaps because the clamp had rusted away. All this after only 186K miles, lousy quality ;). To fix it I cut off the bulb end with a hacksaw, creating about a 1 or 1.5 inch gap between pipes. I took a ~4 inch long piece of exhaust pipe and slipped it over that end, then slipped it back over the rear pipe. Exhaust clamp on both ends.
I was surprised to find that the exhaust pipe is only 1 3/4” diameter. The 1 7/8” pipe I used was a very snug fit. It made it al little tough to slip on, but at least the joint is nice and tight.
All in all it was an easy fix. The flex-joint at the cat pipe to manifold connection makes it easier to fit the new pipe. Also the rear section is balanced such that the forward end tips up to the body when disconnected rather than hanging down and dragging.
Hope this helps.
