Is my Turbo going? 850 1995

Less than a mile after a cold start I hear a whining noise coming from front passenger side. The noise only lasts 30 seconds or so. At first I thought it was a stuck calipher or bad tire. However, I slipped car into neutral while hearing the noise and it continued and applying the brakes had no effect. Didn't notice any loss of power or other symptoms. I changed the oil the day before this started. Did I do something wrong or is this a coincidence. My husband thinks the Turbo could be going. I've made an appointment with the dealer and am terrified of mentioning the word "Turbo" to them. Car has 89K miles.

Re: Is my Turbo going? 850 1995

The whining sound is an air pump, part of the emissions control system. It's functioning normally and it happens periodically.

The turbo is in the center of the engine compartment, between the engine and the firewall, and unless something is catastrophically wrong with it, you won't hear it at all.

Re: Is my Turbo going? 850 1995

Mine made the noise too when the car has been parked outside in a very cold day. That was last year and mine is a non-turbo model. So, I don't think it's your turbo.

I saw on the board that someone mentioning the noise was gone after switching from 10w30 to 5w30. I guess it may have something to do with your oil change.

For me, I'm waiting for the weather to get colder to see if I have the noise before switching to 5w30.

Good luck.

1995 854 GLT 200k miles.

Re: Is my Turbo going? 850 1995

Mr. Y: Another mentioned it was happpening to him too, but he already had 5-30 in. So I'm not convinced that will take care of it. Worth a shot tho...

In my pokings and proddings under the hood while the engine is running, I accidentally put a bit of pressure on the T belt housing, and it made a damn similar sound. I'm not sure tho because from the cabin it does, and should, sound different than right on top of the enigine. Maybe when cold (put on your Pure Speculation 3D Glasses now), the engine metal, being contracted, pulls the cowling down onto the belt a mm and it rubs slightly producing the sound. Then when warm the gap increases. It is a very tight tolerance, if you look.

Re: Is my Turbo going? 850 1995

The turbo is on the drivers side (assuming left hand

drive vehicle) so if it is from the passenger side

it is probably something else.

On the drivers side, under the battery, is a small

pump that evacuates a vapor strage canistor (used

for emission controls). This runs for a short

period when the car is first started and may be what

you are hearing. Above applies to U.S. market (other

markets may have different emission control devices).
