Front O2 sensor replaced and CEL light is gone. V70-XC70 1999

I replaced the O2 sensor on my V70 this morning and disconnected the battery for more than 10 min. After several trips so far, the CEL stays off so I assume it solves the issue.

By taking Klaus' suggestion to soaking the old sensor with PBBlaster for a couple of nights, I finished the job in the matter of a few minutes. Actually, it took longer to unplug the old sensor due to the very tight room.

One note. The old and new sensors both were made by Denso. So, Denso is the OEM for the 99 V70, non-turbo at least.

I'd like to thank Klaus and others for their great suggestions and help.

Best,
Paul

Front O2 sensor replaced and CEL light is gone. V70-XC70 1999

Good morning!

Around a half way of my communting today, CEL lit again. Rushed to an Autozone and picked up a scanner. Got a code of P0442 - EVAP related leak?

I erased the code and it didn't come back on the second half of my trip. I hope the code won't come back; but it may not be the case.

It's a 1999 v70 non-turbo. Where should I start looking?

Thank you very much.

It's possible your oxygen sensor was alright to begin with.

Check under the rear wheel well next to the fuel filter. There is a hard plastic connector back there that tends to crack and makes the car flip out and throw codes for things that aren't wrong with it.

That connector will give you an EVAP code, and it is a hard one to find.

Thank you both for your input. I am going to take a look when weather dries up.

Do you know a place where I can find an image of the connector location?

Best,

Still coping with P0442 V70-XC70 1999

Here is my update. Well, not much.

I bought and tried to replace the J hose about a week ago. I was not in a fighting mood so the job was not done. :-( I checked and the old hose seemed ok. I replaced the gas filler cap and was hoping it would do the job. And there is no luck.

CEL has been reset several times. CEL would come back after about 100 miles of driving (2-days commuting). I have decided to take the car a garage to get the hose replaced and take it from there.

Do any of you know the hose clamp part number?

Thanks a lot.

It is not a critical part so any clamp will do. Usually it is the plastic part that cracks, and any old piece of plastic that makes the 90 degree bend and fits the hoses will also work nicely, it doesn't have to be a Volvo part.

Thanks, Klaus.

Can you clarify a bit? Is the plastic 90 degree connector on the expensive shut-off valve (part#9486016)? Or, something else?

Standalone part. You can see it back by the fuel filter.

Thanks, Klaus,

Been that place several times. But, for some reason, I could not see any images. Do I have to be a volvospeed member to see them?

best,

Changed the J hose on my 99 v70. Yeah, there are ruptures at the end connected to the canister. Hope there is no more CEL and I can take my car for State emission test. It has been one week overdue. :-(

Quick, take it in just in case the p0442 is still lurking. But it looks like you found and fixed it :)

Since CEL comes back the second day, I am not sure whether one-day's driving records in car's computer would let it pass state emission test. I am going to give it another shot--running a couple of more days. Hope cops won't come to my long driveway to ticket me. :-)

My CEL comes on with the same P0442 error code typically after a long drive. I then erase the code with my laptop using DYNOSCAN. It has been intermittant over the past three years with no noticeable increase in frequency (whew). Last week i erased it 20 miles before my NYS emissions test, and it passed inspection.
I just copied the advice given to you so that i might find the erratic small vacuum leak.
Good luck.

Thanks for the info. Since I replaced the J hose last weekend, the CEL has been off since (knock on wood). It is an easy job to replace it on a 99 v70. Maybe you should think about to replace it.

BTW, I have to get my NYS emissions test done this weekend. :-)

Have a good one.
