HELP! Cost for Service: Oil Leak, Tranny flush 850 95

Anyone have an idea what the cost is of fixing a leak from the turbo drain pipe o-ring?

What about cost for having the tranny fluid flushed?

Thanks,

Michael

Oil leak is easy to do yourself - lots of good tips from Volvospeed etc.

Read up and impress your buddies!

The tranny thing isn't difficult however can be messy and if your not already into this kind of maintenance you do have to buy a few things - not much but unless your going to do this on your buddies car too - why bother. Of course if you do it then you have to get rid of the old stuff.

Go to a shop with a trans flush machine - quick connectors snap on and you watch the old brown dirty fluid pump out and the fresh red fluid pushed in. Very safe with no mess. Now the cost.

The dealers can be a bit predatory ( be polite ) although many volvo specialists ( as in non dealers) do have the equipment. I paid $99.00 CDN including fluid! Not synthetic oil but that is another point of view.

Good Luck

Re: HELP! Cost for Service: Oil Leak, Tranny flush 850 95

Michael,

Save your money and do it yourself. The Volvo dealership where I live has an 80/hr labor rate and has impossibly high parts prices.

I am new to the ranks of Volvo ownership, but I'm pretty handy in the garage. As noted in earlier posts the trans flush can be done at home and good instructions are on the Bay 13 site. The trans fluid on the 850 turbo wagon I bought was pretty bad looking and I used 14 qts of Mobil 1 synthetic ATF to completely flush it. The cost? 75 bucks for ATF, 4 for a new cooling line clip, and 2 for 4 feet of 1/2" ID clear plastic hose. Get yourself 2 5 gallon buckets and what passes for a 3 lb coffee can these days. The coffe can will hold 2 qts and change. Set the coffee can in one bucket to catch approx. 2 qts of discharged fluid and any overflow you might get. Dump the fluid into the other bucket. I used this method because there is no way to monitor how much fluid you pump out before the bubbles appear, and there is a chance that you'll try to add more than you have pumped out and make a mess on the garage floor. If you really want to get into this, strain all the used ATF thru an auto paint filter to see what kinds of crap have been floating around in your tranny.

The turbo oil line fix is easy too, just make sure you have safely jacked up and supported the car. Bay 13 has good instructions. Parts at my local dealer, Thieving Bastard Volvo, cost about 10 bucks.

Good Luck,

Bert

The tranny flush was an extra $90 by an independent mechanic

(I say extra cuase done at same time PNP switch replaced).

I think the drain pipe is probably just going to be an hour

of shop labor since that is typically the minimum they charge.

I paid $60 at my mechanic's. They are an independent Volvo shop. As for the turbo thing, I have no idea.

Transmission flush is extemly easy you can do it with one hand...

Go to Volvospeed.com and look under transmission flush all you do is disconect on hole it is right on top next to the radiator..

than turn on your motor all the transmission fluid will flushing out yep

in the mean time you poor in new fluid... yep... keep adding

the fluid come out is black... untill you see some nice pink color come out than you know you just flush it.

reconnect the hole it snap in .. you done I think you need 12 qt fluid for this do you do have to get under the car or anything

it seem a big deal but not take me less than 20 minute

take it to the dealer I think you will be paid $200 or more...

My indie dealer wanted $150 for a machine tranny flush with dino. Got one yesterday at E-Z lube with synthetic fluid fill up for $102. I do believe the tranny is shifting a mite better.
