Update on the shifting problem with my tranny... 850 95

For those that have not been following my earlier post, I've been experiencing a shifting problem in my 850 Turbo. The transmission refuses to upshift. It usually occur after a cold start and the problem will go away after a couple of minutes.

We had a cold front earlier this week and the it made it worse. The transmission was stuck in the "limp" (winter) mode with the arrow on the dash flashing. The Check Engine light stayed on and the E/S/Winter switch on the console was also flashing.

Many on this board have suggested the problem is due to the faulty PNP switch. My dealer called me today and told me the hydraulics in the transmission is bad and advised me a new transmission is needed. I told them to check to PNP switch but they insisted a new transmission is needed. I stopped arguing with them since my extended warranty will cover the repair. But, I will be laughing really hard at them if the new transmission won't fix the problem.

I will keep you guys posted.

Thanks,

Kenneth

Kenneth PLease let us know how your problem turn out.... and how much is the new transmission cost ... $$$$$

You are under warranty so why not get yourself I new transmission ... Go a long with the dealer long as they don't cost you anything.... when the car come warranty ... You will have a brand new car with all new parts...

good luck...

I'd believe your dealer's correct. Surely PNP switches are a fairly common problem BUT they don't cause the symtoms you've mentioned, bad internal hydraulics would.

If it were simply the PNP switch and it was then stuck in limp home mode, it'd shift normally again for a while simply by clearing the code as PNP switches are rarely (if ever) the main cause of a permanent fault (intermittant yes).

Many who've read about the PNP switch problems here simply assume that that's the only thing that ever fails with 850 trannies and that's simply not true. '95 850 trannies are known by Volvo to have a few problems requiring replacement of the trans but by now, you're no longer under factory warranty.

The reman trans includes a new PNP also btw.

Kenneth,

Sounds like it could still possibly be the PNP switch, but if they want to put a new tranny in that is covered by warranty I don't think I would put up too much of a fight (95' w/ new tranny sounds good to me). Good Luck.
