engine removal 850 1995

I am replacing the engine in 1995 850 nonturbo. The reference books talk about using lifting lugs, apparently a volvo special tool, to lift the engine. Are the lugs necessary? Where would you buy them other than the dealer? Thanks

Had mine replaced in January..........mechanic said the engine and tranny come out the (bottom) of the car much better.......not sure how you would accomplish this w/0 a lift though........let us know how it works out!

Not necessary. Pulled engine from my '96 without any special tools. A load leveler (http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_19979_19979) might be handy because you have to pull it out at a fairly high angle.

You might end up bending the accessories mounting plate, as I did, but its soft and pounds back into place nicely.

Ken, Thanks for the info but two other questions I would have are: what did you hook onto on the motor and did you pull the transmission at the same time. Thanks again.

Don't remember exactly. Do remember that the accessory plate (big thick plate that mounts to the end of the engine and holds the power steering pump and other things, got a little bent. Don't know if it got bent 'cause we were pulling directly from it, or if it got bent 'cause the chain was interfering with it.

Yes, pulled the engine and transmission together, from above.

Ken, I did as you recommended and hooked the lift to the two lifing ring that are original equipment on every 850. It worked beautifully and neither ring bent, but I did use an engine leveler between the hoist and the engine(Performance Plus tool). It allows you to tilt the engine in one plane and made it relatively easy. It took about 30 minutes by slowly jacking up the hoist and checking the engine for anything binding with each pump of the jack{hoist). It is a very tight fit and the right hand side of the engine has to be somewhat higher than the left and that's where the engine leveler came in very handy. Also the engine leveler allows you to lift more directly straight up from each of the rings therefore putting less side pressure on them and less of a chance of bending them. I used an engine hoist from
schucks which worked great however later I saw one at a local hardware store made be Performance PLUS that was a very similar design but appeared to be much beefier in materials for only slightly more money. Well now onto attempting to install the new(used) engine from Erie Vo Vo. Thanks again for your help.

I have done it using some of the special tools which do help. On Volvospeed there is a site listed where you can get these tools. Well made, not cheap. The safety issue is very important as there is a lot of weight hanging around. I used the tools to remove the transmission and re do the rear main seal.

dick, thanks for the info, but I looked on volvospeed and couldn,t find the link you mentioned. Would you have anymore details on the link. Also I noticed that there is a ring on the area where the upper motor stabilizer attaches and another ring near the power steering pump. Could these be attachments for lifting the engine? Thanks again, Dwight

Call or look up Kent Moore which is part of SPX tools. They make and distribute Volvo tools. The post is in the maintenance section of volvospeed. Lots of good stuff there.
