How often should you replace the spark plug wires? 850 1996

Hello All,

I have two '96 850 wagons (non-turbos/5 speed manuals) and a '99 XC. I do complete tune-ups on these cars every 30,000 miles. I change the spark plug wires at 60,000 intervals. I think on one occasion, before I hit 60K on one of the cars, a wire shorted, and caused a misfire and in turn the CEL came on.

My question is: should I replace the spark plug wires ever 30K or 60K?

Incidently, the Volvo owner's manual doesn't suggest a time/mileage limit to change the wires, but instead to check them for wear.

I look forward to hearing your opinions.

Thanks!

Hugh

    Hello All Again,

Based upon the responses I read (and I thank you all for responding) it appears OEM wires can easily go beyond 60,000 miles before they need to be replaced.

Hi, have 2x850-94 220/300kkm both running original wires without problems. rotor and cup changed around 200kkm as clearly worn out for reliability not mal fuction.

I have a 1993 NA with 140,000 miles. Original wires, rotor and cap. Gas mileage and performance is normal. I feel it's not worth the cost or time if she's running good. I'm I wrong, or missing something like being stranded with a no start?

I think as long as you don't notice a misfire or rough running or anything, you're fine. It certainly wouldn't hurt anything thought. I had the original wires still on my '88 Honda I'm pretty sure; after I changed them, the little putter it had always ran with disappeared, and it never ran better =).

My Volvo's wires, cap, and rotor all looked just fine and barely worn at all.

Not by time or mileage, but wear. I routinely see original wires go over 150K, which is my limit on life span and totally arbitrary.

The plugs/rotors I change at 40-50K mile intervals, unless something makes it sooner like a missfire.

Of course, plugs/rotor/cap are OEM at my house and the wires are Bougicord.

How often should you replace the spark plug wires? V70-XC70 1998

      Klaus:

At 130k miles, my XC70 just developed a miss under heavy load (only). It will rev fine at light load, but mash the throttle going up a hill in third gear and it misses badly. Back-off the throttle a little, and the problem disappears. Plugs, cap and rotor replaced 25k miles ago. No other running issues, and fuel usage as always (26mph on highway @ 70 mph). I thought it might be bad gas, but a tank of Shell Premium had no effect.

Plug wires and coil are original. MAF replaced 15k miles ago.

      Any ideas?

      Thanks,

      Bill

      Klaus,

Thank you. It seems based upon your experience, I certainly wouldn't be pushing things by letting the wires go till 60K at least before replacing them.

0_o I had 160K on original wires and they still worked alright. I changed them out a couple weekends ago, along with the rotor, dist. cap, and plugs. Honestly, I can't really tell a difference.

After 182k miles, 15.2 years, original wires, rotor and cap, and new spark plugs every 30k miles, our 1995 850 turbo sedan is still flying just like it did when it was new.
