cant insert key V70-XC70 1999

Today the ignition switch lock cylinder on my 99 fwd v70 intermittently would not allow the key to be inserted, to be inserted only with a great deal of force, inserted but the lock would not turn or turns only to the first detent. It then perversely spontaneously freed the lock, in one case as the tow truck arrived. When the lock sticks, the shift lever button cannot be depressed to release the shift lever. This occurred several times today (though thankfully not on last week's vacation road trip).

Any ideas?

I'm going to look at lubing the cables this weekend, any advice regarding that would be appreciated (reducing degree of disassembly, what to use as lube, etc)

Thanks,

Bob

I gots me the same problem with my wife's car right now, 1998 V70.....gotta jiggle the wheel a bit and the ignition module (and be patient!)

So what about "lubing" it as you spoke of- where, how, what kind of lubricant????

Did you update the unit, or was that not necessary???

Any reply will be greatly appreciated!!!

    Mike

I just wicked some PBblaster then light oil into the cable ends, fairly soaked the ign switch end as I couldnt dislodge the cable from the lock assembly. Graphite in the lock cyl itself, we'll see how it holds up. I havent called the locksmith yet, and I've also heard that "we do programmables, but not Volvos" is a common refrain. We'll see. I'll look up the Waltrip dealer in TN, I need a steel drivers rear brake line (at the caliper) and a top tether for a carseat. Does anyone remember a dealer in PA that had big discounts on a website?

      Happy Monday

      Bob

Lubed the cable ends and the lock cylinder, tried the key about a hundred times with no problem and a smooth action. My wife took it out shopping today with no problems so I'll call this one repaired at least on a trial basis. I'm kind of bummed to find out about the PITA spare key ordering issues and expense. I'll look through my bookmarks, there was a dealer in PA that supplied discount parts over the net and see what he sells them for. A locksmith the next town over claims to do programmables, I'll give them a call too. Wish me luck.

Also look up and call Daryl Waltrip Volvo in TN, good discounts + 10% for being a BB member.

Remember, after installing a new lock cylinder from the factory, reprogramming might be required. It shouldn't, but something to look into.

Good that it is working again,

Spray some graphite in there! My front door did the same thing.

If you jiggle the steering wheel (which I'm assuming is locked when you're trying to turn the key), does it help any? My mom's old BMW got to the point where you'd have to finick around with the key for 5 minutes before it would start; it ended up needing a new lock cylinder.

Jiggling the wheel or shift lever does nothing. When the key cannot be inserted or must be forced it is as though the "door" in the key slot is stuck closed or blocked by another part. Once the lock starts working again, it is perfectly smooth. I am leaning toward a fleck of metal or a burr inside the lock, or one of the cable locks preventing the door opening or the cylinder turning..though I do not know if the mechanism is built that the former explanation is valid.

Sounds like the all too common lock cylinder starting to fail. You will probably V70-XC70 1999

have to replace the whole housing and lock, which involves removing the steering
wheel and drilling out the old housing (aluminum piece that sandwiches the steering column). BTDT, unfortunately. I think I remember a write-up over
        on Matthew's Volvo site.
