how to pull left axle out of gear box - Please help 850 1995

Hi, All,

I have tried to pull out the left axle outwithout success for a few hours. Can anyone give me detailed steps of how I can separate the left axle from the gear box? Hayes says using a large screw drive to lever it out.

Appreciate your help.

Thanks,
Paul

    Hello All,

I just did mine over the holiday... I have an M56 transmission.
I removed the left strut (good time to inspect the seats and washer),
loosened the endlink and just pulled the sucker out- it split at the rubber,
so I used a tiny pry bar (smaller than the average screw driver) and one light pry at the casing and it slipped right out.

I did not use Volvo glue or another, and drove it for a few hours on the highway all is well!

    Good luck!

Just want to update. I did it. Tap a fat screwdrive into the gap proving very effective in separating axle from gear box.

Thank you all for your help. Parts should be here tomorrow. I plan to give it another try this weekend (definitely don't want to touch it on Thanksgiving day. :-)).

Wish you all have a great holiday.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

I used the 90 deg end between the inner joint and the tranaxle case. Took a lot more pressure then I liked but the left side shaft finally popped loose.

Or a pry bar. There is a small circlip on the end of the axle IIRC, and it will pop out of the tranny housing.

I had to use a crowbar and jump on it on one side of my car. The other popped out pretty easily.

Thanks for your help. Since there is a tight space and car's on jacks, I am going to get another crowbar and try again.

The following is what I found from this board. Is there any potential damage by tapping in a screw driver into axle/gearbox gap?

"Using a slotted screwdriver slip the driver between the inner CV joint and the trans-axle, there's a ~3mm gap there. Tap it with a hammer to separate the CV joint. This shouldn't take too much effort. Be careful not the damage the oil seal on the trans-axle by "prying" the CV joint away. This is kinda hard to do anyways because there is very little room to get any kind of leverage."

I watched my mechanic do the left side - he had a *very* long pry bar, and of course had a lift. He pulled on the axle while prying. There were some swear words, and it came out. It was stubborn.

I got lucky and happened to attempt the right side myself - the easy one.

My guess would be pry the axle away at the tip of the bar, meaning you aren't prying inward with the end of the bar towards the seal. If you aren't rebuilding the axle, you don't need to worry about damaging the boot. This is just conjecture - I wish you luck.

No, you won't break anything, just tap the end of the screwdriver/crowbar into the gap and it SHOULD pop out. Once you get it in, wiggle/twist it a bit, and it should come loose like my good one did. My other one was particularly stuck for some reason, but it came loose with a good whack.

            Thanks again.

I am going to give it another trial. I was attempting to reboot without removing the axle today; but the CV joint refused to come out and so did the axle. Anyway, the new axle was ordered from FCP. If I still could not get the axle out, I am not afraid to drive my car with a bootless axle to a garage. Hope it won't happen. :-)

            Have a good one.

As you suggest, don't be afraid to drive it with a busted boot to your indie (unless your indie is on the other side of the country or something). A reasonably small trip should be totally fine. You might make the joint worse and end up replacing the whole axle, but the joint should get you there okay if it wasn't making much noise or vibration before you started all this.

I would recommend using two large screwdrivers (or similar) and try and position them as close to 180-degrees apart around the CV-joint-diff. housing gap. That's always been the ticket for me.

Also, if having difficulty, rotate the axle 180-degrees. This will allow the circlip to fall into a different, possibly more-favorable, situation.
