S40 Heater not working S40-V40 2001

OK, my heater is not working. And it just got cold here in central Texas.

On my car, when everything is set to automatic, the heater does not start blowing until there is actually hot air to blow (usually about 3 minutes into my drive).

But now it never kicks in. When I twist the thermostat all the way up, it does start to blow; but it is COLD air. And this is after 20 minutes of highway driving--and the temp gauge on the dash shows the needle right in the middle.

Another clue (but perhaps a red herring): this evening when I shut off the car, the engine fan kept running. This has only happened one other time--when it was overheating due to a radiator leak.

Yours,
Arro Smith
Austin, Tex.

It turns out my water-pump is leaking.
    Estimated cost US$ 1000.

What?! No! That's insane. Replace it yourself; an S40 water pump is $110, and it can't be half as bad to get to as my Accord's was. Even that one only took me ~7 hours to fix, in a gravel driveway without a set of metric sockets. May as well replace your timing belt while you're in there. Shoot me your email address and I'll send you a timing belt write-up for the S40.

don't mess around with this - get the pump done. Also change the timing belt while you're in there because it's expensive to pull that much of the engine apart. Also do any rollers, idlers, tensioners, etc that are due.

While you've got the coolant system open, you should probably also think about doing the thermostat (+gasket), make sure your heater and rad hoses are in good shape, and also do a complete coolant flush. Coolant is not meant to last forever.

$1000 sounds like a lot of money - are you dealing with a dealer or an indie?

    Following up:

After a very cold 30-mile highway drive, I got stopped by a train this morning. While idling for approx 4 minutes, I noticed the temp gauge creeping all the way up.

When I got to work, I popped the hood and found no coolant in the radiator reservoir. I added approximately 3/4 of a gallon to the MAX line in the reservoir. When I started the car, the temp gauge immediately went back to normal--and hot air started blowing out of the vents!

I guess there just wasn't enough coolant??

Uh oh...well the question THEN is where did it all GO?! it's a closed system, it shouldn't lose THAT much coolant ever...you've definately got a major leak somewhere to track down. I'd start with checking hoses.

I would think the first suspect would be the thermostat. It sounds like it's failed (in the 'open' position) and is allowing full flow through the rad at all times, cooling your engine too much.

THAT is a bad ECT sensor. Your thermostat is probably stuck open as well.

Jeez, all these things seem to be failing now that it's getting cold, mine included!
