windshield wiper flying off windshield 850 1996

We just noticed the other day that, at its extreme vertical travel, at the left edge of the windshield, the driver's side windshield wiper is no longer in contact with the windshield. I ran it while standing beside the car, and it actually clears the windshield by at least 1/4" for an inch or so.

Is this normal? There's no visible damage to the wiper arms, both springs are present; I don't see any obvious defect that might be causing this.

This is one of those "850 issues". You can: 1) Replace it, 2) Stop it at the top of the arch put a 2x4 under it and bend the wiper arm down or 3) Get a dremel and grind down the stops a bit. Grinding and bending work for a while but you'll have to do it repeatedly as the mounting arm continues to bend.

The same thing happened to our 1995 850 turbo sedan about 8 years ago. I took it to our body shop friend, he used sufficient local 'heat', changed its shape as needed and it has been working wonderfully well ever since. The cost was about $20 and it tooks minutes. In our case, it did not seem to be accumulated dirt-related at all.

1995 850 turbo sedan, a really great car

    S.N.A.F.U.
This only happens on the driver's side wiper arm.
Bending the arm back into position may help temporarily, but doesn't seem to fix it. I did this several times and finally got tired of it.

I resorted to buying a replacement (about $35, fcp groton). That fixed it.

Possible cause: leaves and debris tend to build up in the corner below the arm, and lever the arm, again and again, over a long time. (Keep this area cleaned out).

How close does it come to the hood when it comes back down? Mine clunks into the hood when it goes down but I've never bothered to fix it - the fix would be to pull it off and move the wiper arm up a tooth on the gear.
