replacement spare tire questions 850

Hello everyone.

The Discount Tyre people told me that they couldn't sell me a donut to replace my spare. They said I'd have to buy a rim and put a regular size tire on that.

I've done some reading on the forums and think that a regular size spare tire will fit just fine in the spare tire well (I hope).

The car has these stock wheels on it: http://www.hubcaphaven.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=3115&Category_Code=709&Store_Code=HC

I was thinking about going to the junk yard today and buying a wheel for the car. I figure what I'll see a lot of is this: http://www.theautopartsshop.com/Search/Default.aspx?Pat=1997+Volvo+850+Wheel&Key=Year+Auto+Car-USA+Parts&gcode=Volvo8501997LKQALY70190U857644&gpartnum=97Vol850/LKQALY70190U85

I figure its easiest to get a Volvo rim due to that little metal alignment pin thingi on the hub that sticks into the typre (for wheel placement purposes?)

How much should I consider paying for a used rim at a junkyard? What defects should I be on the lookout for when picking one? Is this the cheapest route to go?

Thank you all, I know this issue has been covered a lot on the forums.

    Got the spare. It's great.

Now if only I could get the rear trunk deck area on the wagon to shut with the spare tire in the compartment and the third row back there.

On second thought, anyone know how to remove that third row seat on wagons? Maybe I'll sell it on eBay.

      I have a wagon AND a full-sized spare.

The way I got them to coexist is to deflate the spare and in the extra space available in the spare tire well, I store one of those cheap, cigarette lighter-powered air pumps. Yeah, I know those cheap air pumps are unreliable, but for a single use, they're fine.

Now I have a full-sized spare and my wagon floor remains flat.

I looked at your posts and never saw that you had a wagon. With the third row installed, a full sized spare will not fit!!!

To remove, just unbolt everything including the seat belts. The next person will need the latch that is in your seat back, but if you remove it there will be a hole in the seat.

Thanks everyone. A local Volvo shop will sell me a wheel and good tire for $65.00. Does that sound reasonable?

Small temporary spares should be recycled and replaced with a nice 15-16 inch wheel with a real tire on it. Steel or aluminum, it doesn't matter.

Happened to look at my spare a few months ago and the rubber had started to seperate. Man, they sure don't make things like they used to! It only lasted 21 years in the hot trunk. Well I managed to find a good spare at the PYP yard. I would think it would be alot less expesive to do that rather than buying a wheel and tire.

A regular size rim will fit in the spare tire well - no problem.

The alignment pin is unnecessary. If you find a wheel without the hole, just remove the pin with a 10mm wrench before fitting the wheel.

A junkyard or a private seller off Craigslist is probably the cheapest route especially if you can find one with a decent tire already on it. You'll want a wheel from a FWD Volvo. 240, 740/940 wheels have the right bolt pattern but the wrong offset. Look out for corrosion, excessive curb rash, flat spots/dings (especially on the inside of the wheel).

On the off chance that you can't locate any 850 wheels, but there's a 140 in the yard, those wheels will work. The offset is close, only off by 3mm. I'm running a set of 140 wheels on my 850 right now. The clearance to the caliper is a little tight, ~0.09-0.1" minimum in the rear.

Ebay has lots of spares and wheels. Just have a look. You can probably even find one that matches your car. Erie Volvo can for sure help you.......
