steering rack replacement requires new pump? V70-XC70 2002

We brought our 2002 XC into a reputable independent Volvo garage (SVS in Sacramento) reporting that the power steering wasn't working. They looked at the car the next day and called me up to confirm that they were "almost certain" that it was the pump - I authorized the replacement of the PS pump at $700 parts and labor. The next day they call and say that it was actually the rack, and that the new rack and replacement is $1,950 and also that the new rack requires a new pump anyway so I would be financially responsible for both. Initially they told me that if the pump *wasn't* the problem I wouldn't have to pay for its replacement...just the rack. I'm expecting them to remove the charges for the pump. Am I wrong in asking them to do this?

You are correct. Remind them of their earlier statment regarding the pump. First I have heard that the pump is part of the rack.

Is there no recourse to getting to another shop?

I also ordered a coolant flush and had them check the timing belt which was in need of replacement. While replacing the timing belt they discovered that the water pump was leaking. I authorized the water pump replacement as well as the thermostat/housing but I'm still being charged for the $160 for the coolant flush. Would a coolant flush be required anyway with a water pump replacement? Thus far, my 147k mile 2002 xc has a brand new:

- PS Pump
- PS Rack
- thermostat/housing
- Water Pump
- timing belt
- tensioner pulley

Oh...and an oil change...hooray.

Total bill is $3,675. The person who sold me the car has agreed to pay $2000 for the power steering issue.

I'm still about $2k under blue book...but I'm feeling very ill over this. Murphy's Law dictates that the engine will fail about 1 week from now...if not out of neglect, out of sheer jealousy.

Is anyone interested in buying a restored 2002 xc? :-|

Yes, the coolant does need to be drained to replace the pump, BUT you asked them to do the flush... for a mere $150.

Be happy that the PO coughed up $2K for a new rack, I would not have done that if I had sold the car to you. Of course, I woul not have knowingly sold you a car with a leaking rack.

The shop might be very good, but shop around for a better priced indie if you are not going to DIY.

Merry Christmas,

Klaus
