AW55-50 SN Tranny problems / codes V70-XC70 2001

Klaus...don't go too far...I need help with the codes.

We are experiencing tranny problems. It started with the bucking 2-3 shift. We did take the car to the dealer the first time we felt the classic thud. After a software update and a pat on the back, we continued to have the problem. Again, we went back, but there was no lasting resolution. Then, when shifting from 2 to 3, the engine would race, then drop into 3rd. Now, many miles later, no 3rd gear at all.

I just pulled 2 codes: P0740 and P0785

Prior to erasing codes, the message area read, "TRANSMISSION SERVICE REQUIRED"

Mileage: 175K
2.4L Non-Turbo

Engine runs well, low-no oil consumption, but at 800 rpm idle a "NO OIL PRESSURE ..." message appears randomly. Over 850 rpm, the message is gone. VERY concerned about this one.

Thanks in advance.

Read your other transmission posts in the OBDII port thread.

Here is a bunch of info on this transmission if you are interested. From what I have read, shops in North America just replace valve bodies or trannys. But I've read UK shops changing solenoids for successful repairs.

Read "Complex Transmission" at the end of this link. It will point you to lots of internal details on this tranny if you are interested.

Your transmission might be a goner :(

    Here are the codes

    http://www.troublecodes.net/OBD2/Pcodes.shtml#700

p740 = Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Malfuction
    p785 = Shift/Timing Solenoid Malfunction/ 3-2 Shift Solenoid Circuit Electrical

Sounds like they updated your transmission software (Should see TCM=Transmission Control Module on your paperwork)

The only low cost paths left is ATF change and B4 servo cover. But the transmission might already be too damaged.

Here is more info for your reference

    http://howardsvolvos.webs.com/driveline.htm

Valve body job ($2000) may repair it but at your milesage, rebuilt tranny ($4000 including a new valve body) maybe the better way to go if low cost paths don't improve it.

No oil pressure is probably from either internal sludge (Use AutoRX to clean it) and/or oil pump o-rings. See below

I replaced the B-4 Servo Cover last night. No change in the condition of the trans. Fluid replacement is next, then...who knows.

The repair went very well. For those considering this repair, skip the snap ring pliers. Just take a pick tool that has a 90 degree angle at the end. Insert it in one end of the snap ring and pry it loose from its' seat. Then, pull the ring completely out with a pair of pliers. Fast and easy. Takes just one hand and it does not damage the surrounding metal surfaces.

I posted pics on Facebook...here's the link:

I just looked at your pics, nice job!!!

You are correct, the 'oil' isn't supposed to be that color. If 3309 fluid wasn't so darn expensive, you could try a flush.

Keep an eye out for a good used tranny. Then replace the servo with the one you just put in the old one.
