950850 Sedan Speaker Replacement 850

I want to replace the speakers in my 95 850t. The stock stereo sounds OK but the speakers are just plain tired. I checked the Crutchfield site and it states that the front and rear doors are 4" speakers and the rear deck are 5.25".

I believe that about the 4" door speakers but the rear deck speakers appear to by closer to 5"x7" and oval not round. Has anyone done this and what advice can you offer for removing the speaker grills, door panels, rear deck etc...

I will probably leave the dash speakers alone.

The speakers are not tired, they are sunburned and toasted. The door speakers are shielded from the sun pretty good, but the deck and dash speakers have paper cones and surrounds and the UV light and heat cooks them to pieces and the extreme heat sometimes even melts the speakers off.

So, stereotypically, most Volvo owners listen to NPR or Classical music and you don't have to worry about blown speakers from someone listening to Snoop Dogs "gold toothed gangsta". Your door speakers should sound as good as the day the car was new.

To remove the door and dash speaker covers, you just need a small flat head screwdriver. They just pry up and off. The dash speakers are held in place with push snaps.....(you push the center of the button in to release) The door speakers with large torx screws, and the rear speakers are bolted in with 7,8,or 10mm bolts. You will need a 1/4" rachet and deep well socket. I thought the deck speakers were 6X9". Anyway, pop the deck and dash speakers out first and inspect for damage and replace.......

The heat melts the magnets off (not melts the speakers off) esp. the rear deck tweeter)

Also, the Haynes Repair Manual shows great pics. on how to remove these and many more things. There is also a DVD on ebay that has thousands of pics and parts diagrams and tech info on this car. Both are under 25.00 each.

Thanks dg. I would tend to agree with you about the sound and longevity of the speakers but the car is for my son and he has different ideas about music and how it should sound in a car then I do.
I think the stock radio/cassette sounds great. Also have the Volvo 6 CD changer in the trunk and it works and sounds fine. I have also found that a cassette adapter sounds almost as good as a CD for my iPod, at least in my Saab 9-5 wagon it does.

But it's his car and his $$.
