NO OIL PRESSURE = NOT GOOD V70-XC70 2001

2.4L, non-turbo, 176K miles

Engine runs well, low-no oil consumption, but at 800 rpm idle a "NO OIL PRESSURE ..." message appears randomly. Over 850 rpm, the message is gone. VERY concerned about this one.

Does the oil pump on this vehicle have any issues?
Does it have a limited life?

Any ideas?

Seen a few of these where a rubber part of the oil filter falls off and plugs up the oil passages. Usually had some evidence of cheap jiffy lube filters being used.

These engines are notorious for shrunken/cracked o-rings inside the oil pan. There is a pipe running from oil pump outlet to cooler inlet, and the oil pickup tube where it attaches in the block ,these are both known to cause a low pressure condition at idle. Also 2 o-rings between the pan and block can allow pressure loss. Have not seen a pump failure but have seen a crapload of o-ring problems.
The dealer sells an o-ring kit, but it does not include the 2 rings for the cooler attachment.

If this is the case I would start saving for the dealer or experienced indie to do this for you asap.

I say that but it doesn't seem like it would be that expensive of a job.

I'm not sure I'd want to trust it to someone who didn't really know what they were doing though.

I would definitely not skimp on the parts - buy OEM seals for sure. FCP might be able to get them for you cheaper than your dealer.

Unless you're a real experienced DIYer and have some manual to help you (AllDataDIY.com?)....

What WEIGHT oil are you running? It's normal for older cars (most of mine > 200,000 miles) to have low oil pressure at idle or startup, but one the age of yours shouldn't be having those problems yet.

If you're running a heavier oil, I'd suggest switching to a lighter 5W-30 or 10W-30.

If you get lifter noise at idle, it's also possible that the O-rings in the oil pan need to be replaced.

Any component with the word 'pump' in it has a limited life, but truthfully the oil pumps on these engines don't tend to have much in the way of problems. Do a search on the forum for "AWD oil pump" and see what you can dig up but I suspect it will be little - ie: not many people talking about it.

I don't know which engine you have, but on my 1998 5-cyl the idle speed is set at 850 RPM - the engine should never /really/ go below that, though it does briefly in certain circumstances.

I would be concerned about this. The easiest thing to check is your oil level - make sure it's full but NOT overfull, and also clean and fresh. Don't mess around with dirty old oil if you're getting messages like this. If a fresh oil+filter change don't do the trick then you're going to have to start looking at talking to the dealer about that message I would think.
