96 850 Front end creaking over bumps 850

Hi,
My 96 850 (224k miles) has recently developed a creaking noise when going over even the slightest bumps in the road from the passenger side front end. If the car is not moving and I move the front end up and down, I don't hear the noise. It's only when the car is moving.
Any ideas?
Thank you.

At first glance this seems like the spring seat, though sharp-shooter Klaus passed right past the low hanging fruit.

Does it happen at low speed only, around 15-30 mph? As I recall, when my spring seat was bad, the slightest bump in the road, at slow speeds only, caused a nasty creaking sound.

It could be when the suspension relaxes after being compressed, not during the compression cycle.

Take a look at the sway bar end links. They should be tight if you try to wiggle them by hand.

      Hi,
I can wiggle them slightly by hand. Both sides seem to be about equal, but only the right side is making the noises. I guess the next step is to take off the spring and see if the spring seat is bad, unless you have any other ideas.
      Thanks.

Spring seat is easier to check. Just take a large wrench or pliers and turn the large nut on top of the strut tower clockwise. If it turns, the spring seat is bad.

I guess you will need new end links.

I swapped the sway bar links and the noise stays on the right side. The bottom boots on both links were cracked and once I took it off, I found the right side link was pretty loose on the bottom. I'll try your test for the spring seat in the morning.
          Thank you for your help.

I did your test by turning the nut on the shock and sure enough, the right side spins almost free and the left side binds up after a short distance. I guess I'll be replacing the sping seat. Your test was right on! Thanks for your help.
