heater blower fan frustration 850 1994

I have a 94 850 wagon with ECC. I have replaced the fan within the last 3 months with a new part. Now when I turn on the heater/ac i get the the blinking lights of death. I put a voltage meter on the wires leading to the blower and it isn't being feed any juice. fuse is fine...am I looking at a new electronic climate control unit? I see that re-manufactured units are available, but really don't wanna drop $500+ without being sure that it is the problem.

thoughts?

hi, please read the dtc (diagnostic trouble codes) via B1 socket from the diagnostics box, front right, close where you change the right main bulb.
there are close to 50 dtc codes to help us further.

Go back to the B-1 box and read all of the codes again. After each 3 digit code flashes, push the black button again until you get back to the 1-2-2. Then push the black button and hold for 5-7 seconds, release and push again for another 5-7 seconds - that should erase any old codes.

Then push the button once to read the codes that are still outstanding. There should be more than one.

It is possible that the resistor ballast is kaput, it usually happens when the blower is starting to die. The expensive resistor is to the left of the blower.

You don't need a code reader!!! The 2 small boxes do that for you. Take the cover off the 'A' box, pull off the lead, take the cover off the 'B' box and insert the lead into hole B-1. Then push the small black button and count the blinks of lights, in series of three.

There is nothing wrong with the ECC unit, otherwise you wouldn't be getting the flashing lights.

If you don't know how to use the diagnostic boxes, check the 700/900FAQs. Look under Engine:DTCs.

BTW, code readers cannot debug ECCs.

how cool is that...only on a volvo!

ok - placing the wire in B 1 the code read as 1-2-2

B-1 1-2-2 = Outside air temperature sensor failed. No big deal, really, but it will turn off the automatic part of the ECC. You can still work the fan and air direction manually, but I would first clear the code before looking for a replacement sensor.

To clear the code, read the code twice in a row. Just keep pushing the black button until you get the same code. Then push the button down for 5 - 7 seconds, release, and push again for 5 - 7 seconds. The red light will respond both times. Wait 10 seconds, then push the button again. If the 1-2-2 comes up again, the sensor needs to be replaced or the plug to the sensor needs to be cleaned.

The sensor is located at the top of the cabin air intake duct, passenger side, under the windshield and in the engine compartment. A couple of T30? screws to lift the cover. Check for a cabin filter while you are there, if no filter then go to FCPGroton and order a couple of filters and a filter holder to keep dirt out of the system.

PS. Use the code reader boxes to go through all of the A & B ports and clear any codes that come up every time you change your synthetic engine oil. B-2 will show a 1-2-2 that will not clear which is just fine.

              thanks Klaus.

The fan is not working manually. I can control air direction manually, but as soon as I set the fan to AUTO or ON (any speed) the AC and REC lights blink.

This is not making any sense. The 1-2-2 can set the blinking lights, but the fan should still work. If the car is already running and you turn on the fan, the ECC does not go through another system check.

Are you sure that that is the only code you got? Did you check the fuses for the blower? Has the blower been making noises lately, like it is dying?

ok, sorry Klaus...I didn't pull all of the codes...here is the full list:

                  1-2-2
                  1-3-5
                  4-1-1
                  4-1-7
                  4-1-8

That explains why your blower no longer works. If you clear the codes, a couple of them should go away, like 1-3-5 which is the ECT not communicating.

                    4-1-1 Blower overcurrent or siezed
4-1-7 Passengerside temp sensor, blocked fan
4-1-8 Power unit has no control signal

You put in a new blower, so that is no longer siezed.
The cabin temp sensors are behind the front seat grab handles over the doors and need to be cleaned out. The dust collects and blocks the tiny fan.
The power unit is the resistor that controls the fan speed. I suggest you order a new one or find one in a pick&pull. New is about $110 from FCPGroton and will at least get the blower working again.

There are 2 resistors, the cheap one is for Manual and the expensive one is for electronic.

You should have cleared the codes by now. And if the temp sensor for the fresh air is still on the fritz, order one. They are reasonable.

To clean the dust out of the cabin temp sensors, remove the grab handles and use a toothpick to get the dust out - both sides of the car. Once they work again, the code will clear by itself.

I think I waited long enough for the codes, but will try again.

If I start the car with the fan in the off position. The ECC lights don't blink, but as soon as I turn the fan on (either manually or to AUTO) the lights start to flash.

The blower wasn't making any noise, just quite working one day. I had replaced the blower just a couple months ago because it was squeaking like crazy.
