the better half says the car (96 855T)stalled 850

So I get a call last night and the better half says the car (96 855T)stalled. So this morning I took it around the block for a spin, get back in the drive and let it idle, seems fine, then it dies. I try to start it, but I don't hear the hum of the pump and of course no go. So I try again this time I hear the hum and it starts, but then stalls. So what do I look at? The PO had replaced the relay replaced last year as I found the receipt. I also, see that the shop recommended replacing the Turbo Oil Drain seal and gasket(which I did) and the RMS!!!!!! I'm a little pissed off and any help is appreciated.

    Seems like it's either the fuel pump or relay. How many miles? I believe the camm sensor is only used to start the engine. If it dies after startup then that's probably not the cause.

    Pleas do not drive too far with the FP relay out and jumpered. The fuel pump will not turn off if there is an accident.

    The turbo drain and RMS are not connected. If there is a minor leak at the RMS, just monitor it. Your best bet is to clean the PCT and check for crud blocking the line. Clean it out with a small screwdriver or carb cleaner, but be careful of the brittle plastic.

      I wont be going anywhere without the relay. The 240 will get us around for now! I know the RMS and drain aren't related and I gave the PCT a quick clean when I did the PCV the other day. I plan on pulling it out and soaking it when it gets a bit warmer. I'm afraid of cracking the plastic at these temps. Does it just pull out or twist or what?

        The PCT is part of the air ducting, it does not come out and cannot be replaced without replacing the duct $$$.

        The PCV being new, should eliminate any RMS leakage. You might have a small drop of oil from the intercooler weep hole, but that is to be ignored.

        Sounds like all is in control :)

    1) Get it to cut off again
    Then 2) Pull out relay #103 under the hood and stick a paperclip between pins 87 and 13.

    If it runs again, and stays running for a few minutes, you know what it is. Just because the relay was replaced doesn't mean it hasn't gone bad again. Especially with all the Chinese parts out there these days...

    Clean the PCV system and PTC nipple before replacing the RMS, and you can probably save it yet.

      So I just put a jumper between 87 and 31 and nothing happened. Now what? I found this http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/tech/service/850/BasicTesting-Turbo.pdf but the terminals are have different numbers.

        Now, if that doesn't work either, pull out a spark plug and lay it on top of the engine and crank it. You should see a spark.

        If you DONT, it's possible you have a flaky crankshaft or cam position sensor, which can also act up when they get hot.

        You can check the ports on those for continuity with an ohm-meter.

        Your original post points to the fuel pump though, since you didn't hear the buzzing upon trying to start it again. Of course the fuel pump could just be dying too. Usually they work or they don't though, but I have seen them work intermittently.

          haha I was wondering that! I just let it idle for 15 min and it was ok. Took it around the block, then idled in the drive, then shut it off and restarted, but could not get it to fail or stall!! It's getting cold and time for a coffee so I'll go out and play later.

      I did the PCV last week and the Oil Drain, but haven't had a chance to get under it to check for leaks(too cold)

      I'll check the relay this afternoon.
