Moaning when cold..... 850 1997

Hi all, I've been experiencing moans/groans from the engine when I accelerate lightly when the engine is somewhat cold. It always makes this noise when the temp gauge is below the 1/4 mark. If I press the accelrator lightly, it starts to groan, then once I let go, the noise goes away, but if I push the acclerator harder, the noise disappears. If the temp gauge is at the half-way point, there's no problems with the noise. Its been getting worse since the Chicago weather is getting colder. Anyone have an idea of whats wrong? TIA

I have been freed today from a year of the same illness your car suffers. I went through a few belt tensioners (serpintine), pulleys, and belts. Yet in the end, it turned out to be the OIL PUMP!!! I don't know how or why, but it is the fix I have been praying for!!!

    Ben,

I have a similar groan when my engine is cold, the fan is on, transmission in drive, slowing down or stopped with my foot on the brake. It goes away when I turn the fan off, or I step on the gas. I haven't watched the temp gauge for when it goes away. Sound familiar? I posted this question to the list not to long ago, and someone mentioned it could be the fan, or something in the fan. I haven't found anything in the fan. One reply stated that if it is the fan, in all his years of working on Volvos, he has never seen one go bad.

My '94 850T has been doing this since new, but only when the temperature is under 40F. The pitch of the sound is RPM specific, most shrill during engine decelaration at about 1600 RPM. A "moan" is a good description for the sound. The noise disappears about 3 to 5 minutes after engine start and stays gone until the next cold start. Had it in several times under warranty for this, but it was always "could not duplicate complaint". The good news is that it isn't any louder after six years.

Just a wild guess but in years past a number of automatic transmissions groaned, whined, moaned when cold as the main pump struggled to circulate the thick cold fluid--naturally drew in some air which created the noise. It usually only lasted a minute or two.--I haven't heard of this on Volvos but could be possible.

I think you might need a warm blanket and more foreplay.

    Pete.
