S70 non-turbo doesn't start S70 1998

My 1998 S70 stranded me. At 161K mi, the car doesn't start with a brand-new battery. There is no starter-solenoid clicking sound. In normal operation, the headlight momentarily shut off , the starter cranks and the car starts. This time the headlights momentarily shut off and then nothing happens- just dead silence. I even depressed the automatic transmission override switch and the car still does not start.

Other info: check engine light is on - code is P0410 secondary air injection

Any comments out there? ( I don't think its the battery)

    I have some more info on the 50amp fuse. It services both the air pump and the starter.

    In the above Jim says:

    The PCM turns on the air pump by grounding the relay. Only works when engine is first started. I will ad the diag shortly. Jim

    Could the air pump system and relay have a grounding issue.

    S70 non-turbo doesn't start -Update 1 S70 1998

    UPDATE: The service tech says there is a blown 50amp ignition fuse, and a bad alternator. The cars starts now. When I was stranded, I installed a brand-new battery. He now says that new battery has a dead cell. He said I hooked it up wrong.

    What would blow the ignition fuse? Are the other problems related or unrelated?

    I need any urgent help.

      Blown 50 amp fuse S70 1998

      Lets assume that your original no-start was caused by a blown 50amp fuse. The starter runs off the battery and should not exceed the 50amp rating. A failed voltage regulator can possibly blow the fuse and cook a lot of electronics.

      Because you already had a no start condition before installing the new battery, which should be covered under its own warranty, that was not the problem.

      I have never seen a 50amp fuse failure in the past 5-6 years on the Brickboard. You are the first!! There are lots of voltage regulator failures.

        Blown 50 amp fuse S70 1998

        It has been extremely cold in the Northeast US.

        How about this scenario:
        Prior, to my starting problem. I would hear the air pump randomly turn-on for no apparent reason. This is after the engine has reached full operating temperature. (I would hear it turn on and off at a stop light. I consider this normal because PA state emission inspection performed on Jan02,2010 reported 'zero' OBD-II error codes.)

        What if water collected in the air pump froze, the pump momentarily seized and became a high-current draw. Wouldn't this be considered a dead-short condition and be sufficient enough to blow the 50amp fuse? This could have happened during my drive and prior to me parking the car.

        Today, the service checked the air pump and he said it working and not seized.

        Any comments? I know I need to replace that SAS valve allowed the moisture to enter the air pump. Probably drilling holes on the bottom of the input/output sides of the airpump would facilitate moisture drainage.

          First, drill the holes to let the condensed water out of the pump. 1/8" is plenty big. On the bottom edge of the housing, 6:00, and a little higher up but still on the edge at 4:00.

          Of course you passed the 'test', they only check for current codes and driving up to the station with a hot engine...

          Yes, the pump could have blown the fuse. Still, most unusual.

    Any there other vulnerable component that would cause failure to start.
    For example, cam shaft sensor, crank shaft sensor, or air mass ??

      None of the other sensors would cause the starter not to turn. They can cause a no-start condition sure, but the engine would still try to crank. The path for the starter current is all between the battery cables, ignition switch, PNP switch, and the starter itself.

    Wait, before you try that, grab the shifter, and row back and forth between P and L quickly 15 times. Then try starting again. The Park-Neutral-Position switch can cause exactly the issue you're describing - if the car doesn't think it's in Park, it won't let it start.

    If that doesn't work, try what Klaus said =)

    Usually if you're getting at least a click from it, you can give the starter a good hard clonk with something and it'll work.

    You need to check the wires at the starter. Just make sure the ground is off the battery or you might get a decent shock. None of the terminals may be loose.

    Then check the wires at the battery positive terminal. Clean off any corosion and make sure the wires are not broken.

    If you have access to a volt meter, check the voltage at the starter and battery. The battery needs to be above 10V for the starter to activate. Lights take any voltage.

    Turn off the radio, the daytime running lights, the cabin blower, and anything else that can draw voltage.
