S-V 40 frequent headlight failure S40-V40 2000

Does tour 2000 S-V 40 go through headlights? Cars with chassis numbers between 415000-600137 are eligible for an auxillary harness that adds a resistor to the low beam circuit to prolong bulb life. Ask your dealer to refer to service bulletin section 3, group 37, #0008. It describes adding a new harness between the central electrical module and the car harness, and replaceing both bulbs. It is covered by warranty. Harness part number is 30621291. Bulb part no.is 981465.

    I thought it's a problem of my 2000-S40 US (chassis 448xxx).

Got both bulbs burned at 4500 miles - dealer replaced them, but did not tell anything about harness...

My 2000 S40 just had its second bulb replaced in 17000 miles. First time a dealer did it but no mention was made of a harness(June 2000). I replaced a second bulb myself ($15) because I didn't want to drive 130 miles to my dealer. How do you go about convincing the Service Dept you need this taken care of?

It's kind of like the ball joint recall on the S80, the word is out before the parts are in place to support the change. I went to the parts window today and asked for the harness and when they stopped rolling on the floor, they order some.

Whoa.. Add a resistor? Could you tell how they wired this? Does the harness just add a resistor to the bulb? That's gonna be one fat resistor to handle 55 watts.

Scary. So we're now extending life of the bulb by running them below designed voltage and thus reducng light output? Will people now start adding 'driving lights' because the output now 'sucks'?

    Hmm.. BTW..

What qualifies as 'too many' bulbs?

Remember: H7 bulbs have a projected lifespan of between 200 and 350 hours. If you drive your car on average for about 2 hours every day (eg. 1 hour commute) you will be replacing bulbs at least every 4 to 6 months. Drive more and it will probably go down to 3 months.

To compare.. The 9006 bulbs used in the US have a projected lifespan of between 800 to 1000 hours. That translates to about 1 to 2 years of use.

So no H7 setup will ever reach this bulb-life if operated at the design voltage, at which they produce their rated lumen output.

Sorry, but that's simply how this bulb type works: it burns out quicker.

    Bye, Arno.

The new H-7 bulbs are longer life 750 hours, and the cable addition actually puts the bulbs at designed operating voltage instead of a tad higher. (the wiring harness was not dropping the voltage into the range desired)

        Very interesting.

Still have to wonder what the tradeoff is for these long-life H7's. With this sort of thing there's usually no 'free lunch'. You get more on one end then something has to get less on the other end.

Any idea what the voltage was at the bulb connector? The lifespan is rated when running at 13.5V and most cars don't have anything over that voltage at the connector.

Would be pretty cool IMHO if the S40's can get 14V or higher at the connector. That would mean that auxilliary harnesses connected to the alternator to get a higher voltage (and thus more light) are not useful on these cars.

Still.. I'm already using the same set of Philips WeatherVision H7 bulbs for nearly a year in my 2000 V40. No burn-outs. Same goes for my 1998 T4. Will be replacing them soon though as the light output is beginning to drop off.

        Bye, Arno.

If your bulbs are lasting then your harness is being kind to the bulbs, but not all have the same story. There has been enough problem for the Volvo Engineers to find out what was wrong and come up with a solution, not to say that it is going to apply to every car. We are talking about tenths of a volt.(I believe)
