STIFF STEERING 850 1995

Steering has gone stiff when first turning wheel. Once it starts to turn it gets easier. Will not return to center, needs to be steered back. Stiff in both directions. Fluid is good. Hissing noise from pump when steering but I believe this is normal. Louder sound when steering reaches end of stroke and goes over relief. Belt looks OK. Running engine at higher RPM's does not help. Pump, rotary valve or steering rack? Which is the most likely suspect?

It did turn out to be a worn out U-joint on the steering column. Cheaper repair than power steering components!

Could be corrosion in your steering shaft u-joint. I recently cured a similar problem in my car by thoroughly spraying it with WD-40.

The u-joint is in front of the driver below, and somewhat behind, the brake booster. Spray the joint with WD-40 as you work the steering almost lock to lock. Do this for a couple of minutes.

Hope this works :)

Maybe try draining and refilling the resevoir a few days in a row to get some fresh fluid in the system? Can you try jacking both front wheels off the ground and turning the wheel with the engine off?
