Turn signal does not flash after car has been running for 15-20 minutes V70-XC70 1998

Just noticed this week that the turn signals will not flash (turn signals just stay illuminated) after the car has been running for about 20 minutes. I don't think its a fuse issue since all bulbs seem to properly light up. Is there a flasher unit or something (remembering from my 1976 BMW) that needs to be replaced? If so, where is it located on 1998 V70?

Thanks in advance.
Chuck

Out of curiosity, what 76 BMW did you have?

My mom still has the 74 BMW 2002 she was given when she turned 16. Original engine, transmission, and still driven to work every day the weather is not bad. That car is still an absolute blast to drive.

The hazard light switch is very easy to remove if you pull out the radio first (the two tabs on the sides push in and the pop out so you can pull it straight out). From there, you will be able to reach under and push out the hazard light switch and disconnect it.

Let me know if you need a new one - I have a spare that I thought was bad (my problem was the ignition switch) that still works just fine. If I can find it.

I wonder if the switch is just starting to die, because the flashers do work properly initially. I also read at some other sources to "tap it slightly once taken out" I may give that a try first. Otherwise I may take you up on that spare unit.

As for the BMW, it is a 2002 and a ton of fun. I saved it from the crusher almost 10 years ago with visions of 'restoring' it. Here we are 10 years later and it still not done. I drive it in the summer months and my four kids love it nearly as much as I do. Fun to drive, light, quick. It has been tucked away for the winter for three months and I miss it.

Thanks for all the info. and I may just look you up on the spare. Gimme a week or so to see if the tapping trick works.

      Chuck

Originally, this one was bought as a parts car, mainly for the body. There was a time growing up we had 2 of them running at once. The rest of it was not in very good shape - the engine eventually threw a rod after driving it for several months. The automatic choke would stick in the mornings and rev it to oblivion, and the auto transmission would not shift out of 2nd gear unless it felt like it.

The body from her original was rusting through something awful from having spent 12 years of its life in Pennsylvania/Massachusetts. But the engine, interior, and transmission were all kept from her model (this one was an auto originally). After hitting a deer head-on, the hood & bumper were actually fixed with the parts from the original, and the whole car repainted its original color instead of the faded pink it had become.

Yeah, you have to give the doors and trunk a good hard slam, there's horsehair falling out of the seats, and it smokes quite a bit when started, but it still starts up in about 1 second =).

Not many people can say they owned a car since new and kept it THAT long.

If you determine that the flasher switch has failed and must be replaced, the Volvo part number is 8628632. It cost $69 at my dealer in 2004.

Also available at Swedish Auto Parts for $66.99 : http://www.swedishautoparts.com/V70/volvo-v70-switches.html

And at IPD for $54.90: http://www.ipdusa.com/Volvo-S70V70-1998-2000/Electrical/Hazard-Flasher-Switch/p-128-363-4864/

And there is always your local salvage yard.

The flasher relay is part of the emergency flasher button which I alwasy manage to hit with my knuckle when putting the shifter in Park. Push on the red triangle, and if the turn signals don't blink, just pull the flasher out to replace it.
