Head gasket V70-XC70 2002

Working on a 2002 xc 70 T5 with a blown head gasket.

I do not have a manual and upon further research there isn't really a manual out there that is worth much. I do have an 850 manual. Is there that much a difference in the motors?

I am sure that this a topic that someone has covered here, however my inability to correctly search has left me with no results.

Please help either with suggestions on a manual, a link to someones page that has helpful pointers and directions or a couple cases of dynamite to vaporize the problem all together.

Thanks!!

Andrew

I haven't played with the P2 cars. The slightly older 5 cyl engines with VVT require the owner to rotate the engine past TDC by 90 degrees and then back to TDC to take the tension out of the exhaust cam.

You can build your own cam locking tools, as shown in the Haynes 850 manual. That still works. Expect a lot more piping on the 2002 engine. And use Alldata for torque specs, etc. You will need new OEM head bolts.

Soak the exhaust manifold bolts with PBBlaster for a day or 2.

Yes, there are no more manuals. The 850 engine block is the same as yours, almost, and the head has been redesigned.

I would subscribe to www.alldatadiy.com

Reasonably cheap, for 1 year, and the ability to print all sorts of good stuff. While you could take the head off using the 850 manual, there are no instructions on how to handle the VVT.

Please, use a ziptie on either one of the exhaust cams so you remember which is which. Ditto for the cam gear. And bite the bullet and buy a small can of Volvo glue to put the valve cover back on.

While the head is off, good time to inspect the valves, guides, and seals.

Klaus,

Thanks for your response!

Can you give me any pointers on the VVT?

Thanks!

Andrew
