Intermittent No-Start 850 1994

A couple of times a month, when I turn the key, all of the dash panels light up but the starter does not engage. Usually after trying it a few times it starts. Could this be the dreaded PNP switch? Could there be other causes? Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem. It seems that moving the shift lever from park to neutral a couple of times usually solves the problem. Had a scare the other day when this didn't seem to work, but then it cranked after some fiddling. It seems that this must indicate that it is the PNP switch. Anybody know if this is an easy replacement? I don't see any procedure listed on Volvospeed.

      Re: Intermittent No-Start 850 1994

Watch out guys or your intermittent problem will get worse! My 850 turbo (94) started that trick last summer. Two dealers and one indie mechanic later and no fix. Sunday my intermittent problem became every other time I tried to start it and this morning, no dice at all.

I have an appointment with a Bosch service center tomorrow morning. What more can you tell me about this PNP switch? I sure would like to point them in the right direction.

      Susan

It does sound like the PNP switch. No posting at Volvospeed because I haven't shot and written up the sequence yet. It is one of the more complicated "do it yourself" jobs. I shouldn't say complicated but enough items in the procedure that make it tough, like getting the connector apart, and then the line up of the switch correctly. Once you've done a few it is just another repair, but first time without someone to help you real time could be frustrating. I'll get busy on the photos and get them to Charles as soon as possable.
