Intercooler fan -- worth wiring separately? S40-V40 '99

My '99 V40 2.0T (Euro-spec 160bhp model with the 1950cc engine) has two cooling fans: one for the radiator and one behind the intercooler.

Would it deliver any benefit if the intercooler fan could be wired for a manual override switch, so I could turn it on when I'm driving hard? Would it make any difference in keeping the charge temp. down when driving hard? What's your opinions on this? I don't get any engine problems, and being in the UK high ambient temps are not a problem ;-) but I wondered if it would help keep power output at optimum levels.

If you're worried about the air charge temperature then you're probably better off by installing water nozzles, so you can spray water on the intercooler to get it's efficiency up.

Shouldn't be a problem though unless you like to cruise at near top-speed for longer periods while outside temperature is high and humidity is low.

A real water injection kit (like sold by Kalmar Union for the S40 in the UK) may help too, but I'm not sure how much it will contribute.

Bye, Arno.

Thanks for the reply .... I'm not worried about it, but just wondered if it would help ensure the engine's always giving its best, no matter what the conditions are. I've read that water misters for intercoolers can reduce inlet charge temp by quite a lot, maybe worth trying to rig something up.

Exactly..

I'm looking into installing something like this on my T4 as the external temperature has a pretty dramatic effect on the top speed of the car. Cooler intake air will definitely make it much happier. At the moment it's at it's best in the morning with cool air and a light fog/haze to get a high moistiure content.

Next summer I hope to be getting a new turbo with a different compressor trim and twin-scroll housing and bigger downpipe + metal-core cat. That should bump the low-rpm torque up a bit (my '98 T4 still has the 'normal' turbo. The Phase-II T4's have the twin-scroll type) and lower exhaust/cat temperatures when running lots of boost, so it can run at high boost for longer periods.

Bye, Arno.

You could rig it up to the headlight washers maybe ... or use a separate reservoir and motor to spray it. The water injection kits I've seen use the screen washer reservoir, a separate pump and a 15% methanol / water mix. Have you considered water injection rather than intercooler misting?

I'm interested in the relative effects of each.

What would be interesting is fitting a hotted-up T5 motor into a T4. Apparently they can be made to fit ...

Before wasting any time or energy on this notion of yours, try seeing if you can really tell ANY difference while driving in rain first as you won't (hmmmmm)

Now, cooler outdoor air temp is denser so that in itself might be a tad more noticeable but there really isn't a good way to cool hot air blowing on your intercooler on a hot summer day.

The added fan is there for the AC systems operation as it's needed to help cool freon at high temps, at slow speeds or at idle for better AC cooling, and has nothing to do with the intercooler.

I'd just leave it alone.
