gas tank capacity - what's wrong here? V70-XC70 00

I have a 2000 V 70 R AWD which yesterday took 17.7 gallons to fill, at least according to the pump meter. I checked my owner's manual and the tank capacity is listed at 17.4 gallons. The question is, what's wrong: the pump or the manual. FWIW, this is an early production car, 5/00, and the amber low-fuel light had been on for fewer than 10 miles. TIA for any insights.

Victor, according to my info from the Owner's manual all AWD wagons have a 17.4-gallon tank and the FWDs have a 17.8-gallon tank.

So, it could be the pump.

17.4 sounds familiar. I've hit 18+ gallons when on a few occasions in my 2000 V70R.

Hi all

you have an expasion tank that sits on top of the tank which can hold the eronious fuel level you have mentioned. It is not adviable to fill beyond the normal level. Top up after the valve has closed and then let it be. trying to squeeze every drop in the tank can cause alot of problems with the evaporative system.

Up here in Canada the gas pumps are volume corrected to 15 C. I have forgotten the formulas for expansion/contraction of a volatile liquid like gasoline if the temperature is much different. I suspect that it won't be half a gallon though.
