2002 DTC S60

Have a 2002 S60 non-turbo.
Check engine light came on.
Used a scantool2 to check the DTC.
This is what I found.

P0350 Ignition Coil Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction
P0351 Ignition Coil A Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction
P0352 Ignition Coil B Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction

The description is from that huge list I found on this board.

My question is what do I look for that would have caused these DTC.
I already used the scantool to reset the codes.

Thanks in advance.

John

Update - 2002 DTC S60

Replaced all 5 plugs today.
Question; Is #1 cylinder on the right or left from the front.
Looking at the right side, the first 2 plugs were more worn than the other 3.
Swaped the 2 coils on the left with the 2 on the right.
Only able to run at idle in the driveway and drive for 3 to 4 miles.
Tomorrow is the 60 mile commute...

Update - 2002 DTC S60

120 miles later and no check engine light. Used the scan tool to check and no codes. It does say "not ready" right below the "no codes".
Is there some type of drive cycle (so many miles, various rpm, etc) before the computer resets?
My understanding is it won't pass smog if it says "not ready"
Smog is not due untill Aug this year.

Update - 2002 DTC S60

A 'drive cycle' is required whenever the battery is disconnected. Quite lengthy and precise, but it should be completed by August :)

Your car has individual coils over each spark plug. Sounds like #1 and #2 don't work as well as they should.

Thanks KlausC

After doing more research that may be the problem.

After resetting the codes the check engine light came back on and only codes for 1 and 2 were present.

Don't know when the plugs were changed last, was gonna start there.
Either Bosch 4228 or NGK (6418)BK6EIX, both available local on Sat.

Do the individual coils go bad that often?

Was also going to try swaping the 1 and 2 coils with 3,4 or 5 if possible and see if the problem follows.
Would do this after the plug change and only if the codes did not appear again.

At $50 a coil thats $250 for all 5.

Definitly swap the coils first. You might find small cracks in the sides of the coils due to excessive heat, a problem with the design of the coil placement under the cover.

Never buy 5 new coils, much too expensive. But, it is always nice to have an extra one in with the spare tire, along with a wrench for replacement if you are on the road.

Often on an older engine the wiring to the connector on the individual coils go bad, crack from heat and can sometimes cause intermittent behavior or codes. Check the wiring and don't flex the wires much when removing the coils, and don't remove the connector before removing the coil to replace the plugs as that often can crack the wires and loosen the pins in the connector.
