1999 V70 ABS/Rear Brake Issue V70-XC70

A couple of years ago, I had the after-market ABS module installed on my 99 V70. It went off without a hitch. Recently, I noticed my brakes were making a grinding noise as I came to nearly a stop. I had front pads and rotors replaced a few months ago. Rear brakes were done about 1.5 years ago. I took it to my mechanic, a Volvo only shop, who does all my work, installed the ABS module for me, etc.

He diagnosed "uneven brake caliper pressure" and said he had seen this before when an ABS system was going haywire. However, it wasn't something that was going on when he looked at the vehicle. He mentioned something about intermittent pressure on the brakes at speed. I'm not a mechanic and didn't write down exactly what he said.

In any event, he replaced the rear brake pads and rotors at no charge, "warranty." No futher action at this point.

Anyone ever heard of anything like this???????????

Steve

What the heck is an 'aftermarket' ABS module? Refurbished? The problem with the OEM ABS modules is with the soldering, which can be easily repaired and made better than new.

Rear brakes are modulated by the ABS system so that they will not lock up. A bad ABS module will not do this and rear pads tend to wear faster than normal.

What you describe is a dirty slide pin or two, or a sticky caliper piston on one side which is not returning properly. It may be time to replace a caliper?

The ABS module I'm talking about is the only one I have ever seen mentioned on the board. You send the guy yours, pay for it on Ebay and he sends you one back that is rebuilt. Is that an accurate enough description?

So we don't think an ABS module could cause the stated problem in any situation? I will ask the mechanic about the caliper.

      Thanks
