Brake Ligths Stuck ON on 2001 V70 V70-XC70 2001

Brake lights on my 2001 V70 became 'sticky", i.e. stayed ON after I released the pedal, but now they are ON all the time. I disconnected the battery, but will unplug the bulbs for now.

This is not the switch problem, since the LED light strip works normally.

I know this is not a unique problem, but I could not find a solution on BB.

Come on, guys and girls, please share your experience.

Either Volvos got much better or people lost interest, but I remember a few years back, in my 850 days, the BB was very active. Every problem I had on 850 I resolved with BB.

Waiting with hope,

Yuri

01 models had a problem with the brake light relay in the rear electrical module. I think there was a tsb advising to replace the relay.

On my 1995 and 1998, I wired both sides so that I would have 2 fog lights.

In your case, the wires go through a brake light switch box in the rear of the car, close to the rear fuse box. Check the ground wire.

Indeed, a bad relay.
To complete this thread - the brake lights relay went bad. In 2002 models this is actually a recall item, but 2001, which has the same relay is not a part of this recall.

The relay is question is a double size relay, and the solution is to replace it with two separate relays. To make things more confusing Volvo recommends two different part numbers for the two replacement relays. So when you buy these replacements they sell you two different relays. They are identical in shape and fully interchangeable, but part numbers are different.

The dealer was not able to tell which relay goes into which socket. They just install them randomly. And this is what I did. Everything works fine.

I suspect these two relays are identical inside, but made by different suppliers.

Hope this will help

Don't throw away the old relay, take off the cover and find out what went bad.

Two relays to replace one big one? And it doesn't make any difference which goes where? I am liking my 1967 122 more and more everyday: 4 fuses and one small headlight relay, for the whole car!
