ETM Replacement on my 2000 V70R AWD V70-XC70 2000

Just replaced my failed/out of warranty ETM on my V70, bought it from xeMOdex. I recommend this route for anyone with a failed ETM, installed it myself in less than 1 hour and it is a direct fit replacement, will send the old one back for the core deposit tomorrow.

:)

ETM Replacement on my 2000 V70R AWD - thanks, useful information! V70-XC70 2000

V7 Thanks, I will ship the old ETM back to xeMODex today, this is the real fix for the ETM and mine just ran out of warranty in the Fall of 2009 and just started to act up in February 2010.

Mr. Galinski who is the POC at xeMODex is very helpful and will work with you as you go though the diagnosis of your particular problem.

Good Luck with this, you can also find out more on the Web Sites:

MatthewsVolvo.com and VOLVOSPEED.COM

Good luck with this, according to the historical info on these sites, if you are a DYI person, you can save some big $ by pursuing this route.

Thanks,

ETM Replacement on my 2000 V70R AWD - so far original is OK V70-XC70 2000

I have been very lucky, and the original ETM on the V70 is still working. I even had it checked at the Volvo dealer and they confirmed it was fine. But as with your car, the 10-year warranty has expired, and it may fail any time.

I wonder just how many cars with this ETM module suffered the failure; was it 100%, 50%, 20%? With internet forums, sometimes a relatively minor problem gets blown up to be a big deal. But the converse is also true. If you ask the service guy at the dealer, a common response is, "We've never seen this before." Right......

1999-2001, all ETMs will fail when subject to heat and low throttle applications. The "R" is a different case, for some strange reason. Probably because of the lead feet of R drivers :)

ETM Replacement on my 2000 V70R AWD - so far original is OK V70-XC70 2000

Hello Klaus,

I see you commented on my posting of last week. The ETM had failed and after initially running well, the stumble returned to the Car. It was not as bad and after running some codes with the OBD II and more research, I narrowed the diagnosis down to the MAF sensor last weekend. I was able to do this with the code analysis as well as some other Forum research on this Board as well as on Matthews Volvo Forums etc.

I replaced the MAF sensor with a new one last pm and have the same problem but when I unplug the electrical leads to MAF sensor same as before I replaced it, the car idles more smoothly but does not accelerate well. The engine also seems to Bog Down under load at around 4k RPM when revving the engine in P as well as when driving.

As I have read from many on all of the Forums, much frustration and as an experienced DIY guy, am thinking that it may be the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) or the MAP sensor.

I am not in to just replacing parts but as you can see may have with the MAF replacement (Jury Still out on this one) but what do you and/or others think? I have found a local independent VOLVO shop that has a good reputation but not ready to surrender and take it to the Man yet. The engine does run better with the ETM replacement and know that was an issue prior to replacement.

Yes, if I had a '98 R with the mechanical linkage, perhaps all would be well but as you have read, it aim't a '98. I recently replaced the Timing Belt, Tensioner and all other parts there of to include the H2O pump and all seemed fine upon start up except for the ETM hesitation problem that disappeared with the new ETM - then the idle issue started. I made sure that all Timing Marks were in sych upon the T-Belt replacement and I will check this again this weekend just to make sure we are not off of time by a degrees (jumped timing?)

Thanks for all of your input as I have learned quite a bit with the Bricks I have owned/own from your comments.

Thoughts?

You really should start a new post. A bad MAF usually has symptoms of a poor idle, when uplugged the idle stabilizes because the ECU uses default values but runs poorly at higher rpms.

What are all of your codes? Have you tried cleaning the throttle body? Are there any vacuum leaks?

Understand the default direction when MAF unplugged, just thought I would continue from what I started with.

The ETM is a new one from xeMODex so that is what I started with to improve the operation of the engine.

The scan code only provided one fault - I have the number at home but it read - "air intake sensor fault" or somthing to that effect.

I will do a rescan this weekend and let you know.

Appreciate the help and will start a new message thread.

John

Or you get the 98 V70 R and avoid all that mess =)
